Position Purpose

The Highway Field Maintenance Worker is a safety-sensitive position subject to Highway Dept. drug & alcohol procedures, must be available to report to work during regular business hours and must be available after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. Under general supervision, this entry level Highway Field Maintenance Worker position learns and performs highway maintenance duties. Responsible for maintaining safe and efficient travel ways throughout the county by removing hazards and repairing safety appurtenances.

Hours for this position are:
Winter: Mon-Fri 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with one-half hour lunch. Work schedule fluctuates with the change of seasons and workloads. Flexibility is required based on workloads. Must be available to report to work after hours to respond to emergencies and/or weather conditions. Availability is the ability to respond to a phone call within 15 minutes and report to duty within 45 minutes. **There are possibilities of overtime to this position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Must be available to report to work after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. Availability is the ability to respond to a phone call within 15 minutes and report to duty within 45 minutes.
  • Performs highway maintenance duties including pot hole patching, crack filling, sweeping, mowing, brush cutting, guardrail repair, bridge maintenance, etc.
  • Performs various maintenance activities at the airport including: snow removal, vehicle and equipment maintenance, building maintenance, cleaning, painting, fence and gate repair, brush removal and other duties as assigned.
  • Assists Equipment Operators in the construction and repair of highways and related infrastructure
  • Removes hazards and debris from roadways
  • Performs support roles for winter operations such as making brine, plowing parking lots, servicing equipment, repairing signs and mailboxes, etc.
  • Supports construction activities by setting signs, erecting barricades, flagging traffic, assist in striping operations
  • Understands WIS DOT work zone field manual to correctly setup various traffic control layouts.
  • Erects and removes snow fence, repairs fences and barriers on right of way, landscapes roadsides, installs erosion control devices
  • Knowledge and ability to set up levels, lasers and utility locators.
  • Operates small tools such as chainsaws, string trimmers, brush cutters, power saws, jack hammers, impacts, painters, drills, etc.
  • Operates hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, wrenches, etc.
  • Operates non-Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) such as trucks, tractors, mowers, brooms, forklifts, loaders, pulls light trailers, operate tar kettles, and other small equipment as assigned
  • Maintains grounds adjacent to highway facilities, planting and cutting grass, laying sod, installing landscape materials, etc.
  • Performs minor repairs to facilities
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required
  • Completes and submits records of time, location, materials, and equipment used on each project daily.
  • Expected to work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Conduct duties in a safe diligent manner at all times
  • Ability to communicate relevant information to team members in a respectful and constructive way
  • Effectively maintain equipment through inspections, greasing and lubing, servicing, making minor repairs and adjustments, and operating appropriately
  • Maintain a clean and safe worksite
Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements
  • Graduate from high school or G.E.D. and valid Wisconsin driver\'s license
  • Experience running small equipment and vehicles
  • This position does require successful completion of a Post Offer Pre Employment Examination (POPE).
  • Or, any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver\'s License required.
Required or Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate and service trucks, tractors, and light equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation.
  • Ability to apply basic computer skills to enter time, record materials, check emails, etc.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, and cope with distracting vibrations, fumes, dust, etc.
  • Ability to organize and maintain accurate and complete records, and prepare clear and comprehensive reports
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate safety regulations.
  • Ability to work semi-independently making sound decisions using good judgment.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with co-workers, county officials and officers, general public, etc.
  • Ability to budget time and schedule work to efficiently complete tasks.
  • Ability to organize and schedule work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, lift, carry; push, pull, and otherwise move objects up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
