Job Summary

The Aircraft Mechanic Apprentice will assist Licensed A&P Mechanics in performing maintenance, inspections, and repairs on our Hughes 500 helicopters, gaining hands-on experience while ensuring compliance with FAA regulations and company standards. This role is ideal for someone passionate about aviation maintenance, eager to learn, and committed to safety in a dynamic tourism and utility aviation environment.

Responsibilities

Maintenance Support:

Assist in scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, including 100-hour, annual, and phase inspections, under the supervision of licensed A&P mechanics. Support troubleshooting and repairs on airframe, powerplant (e.g., Rolls-Royce 250 engines), and basic avionics systems for Hughes 500 helicopters. Help document maintenance activities in logbooks, 337 forms, service bulletins, and airworthiness directives.

Tool & Equipment Management:

Maintain and organize tools, equipment, and the hangar workspace to ensure a safe and efficient work environment. Assist in inspecting ground support equipment and ensuring proper storage of parts and supplies.

Learning & Development:

Learn FAA regulations (e.g., FAR Part 43, 135) and manufacturer maintenance guidelines through hands-on training. Participate in rotor track and balance, sheet metal repairs, and other technical tasks under guidance. Study technical manuals, service bulletins, and Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) to build knowledge.

Safety & Compliance:

Adhere to FAA Part 135, Part 133, and Part 136 regulations, as well as company Safety Management System (SMS) protocols. Follow OSHA and FAA safety standards in all tasks. Report any safety concerns or discrepancies to supervisors immediately.

Operational Support:

Assist in preparing aircraft for daily tour and utility operations. Communicate effectively with mechanics, pilots, and management to support fleet readiness.
Qualifications

Education & Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Enrollment in or completion of an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) program preferred. Prior experience in mechanical, automotive, or aviation maintenance is a plus but not required.

Skills & Abilities:

Basic understanding of mechanical systems and a strong desire to learn helicopter maintenance. Ability to follow detailed instructions and work under supervision in a fast-paced environment. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety. Basic proficiency with hand tools and willingness to learn aviation-specific tools and equipment. Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.

Other Requirements:

Must provide a basic set of hand tools (specialty tools provided by the company). Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and occasional on-call duties. Must pass pre-employment DOT/FAA drug test and participate in random drug testing. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Must be based in or willing to relocate to Lihue, Kauai, HI.
