Job Description

Seeking a Heavy Equipment Superintendent / Manager to lead its equipment operations and keep projects supplied with safe, reliable, and well-maintained gear.

From large excavators and dozers to support trucks, trailers, and small tools, you'll be the point person for everything that moves, digs, hauls, or lifts on the job. This role blends strategic fleet management with hands-on leadership, ideal for someone who knows the iron and knows how to run a team.

Role Overview

You will oversee the full equipment lifecycle and support project teams by:

Managing a mixed fleet of heavy construction equipment, support vehicles, trailers, and small tools. Leading shop and field mechanics/technicians, setting daily priorities and providing technical guidance. Coordinating equipment deployment, mobilization/demobilization, and equipment moves between multiple jobsites. Building and managing preventive maintenance programs to maximize uptime and extend asset life. Driving safety and regulatory compliance (DOT, OSHA, manufacturer requirements). Managing relationships with equipment dealers, rental companies, and parts suppliers. Tracking utilization, hours, condition, and costs; assisting with buy vs. rent decisions and budget planning.
Key Responsibilities

Fleet & Equipment Management

Oversee selection, purchasing, rentals, assignment, maintenance, and disposal of equipment. Ensure the right machines are available for each project phase and coordinated with project schedules. Monitor utilization reports and adjust fleet allocation to minimize idle equipment and unnecessary rentals.
Team Leadership & Shop Operations

Supervise and mentor mechanics, technicians, and equipment support staff. Assign daily work orders, balance shop and field priorities, and ensure timely completion of repairs. Provide direction on complex diagnostics and repair strategies for diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems. Foster a culture of accountability, communication, and continuous improvement.
Preventive Maintenance & Repair

Develop and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for all major equipment classes. Ensure repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and documented accurately. Maintain service histories, inspection records, and warranty information. Coordinate PM work with project teams to avoid downtime on critical operations.
Safety, Compliance & DOT

Champion safe work practices in all shop and field equipment activities. Ensure DOT compliance for vehicles, drivers, and equipment transport. Oversee periodic inspections, safety meetings, and corrective actions as needed.
Vendor, Rental & Inventory Management

Build strong partnerships with OEM dealers, rental houses, and parts suppliers. Negotiate pricing, rental terms, and service agreements. Oversee inventory of small tools, consumables, and critical spare parts. Approve equipment-related purchases within budget and company guidelines.
Planning, Budgeting & Operations Support

Work with project managers and estimators to forecast equipment needs for bids and upcoming work. Provide input on equipment strategy that can reduce project cost or duration. Track and report key metrics (uptime, cost per hour, maintenance spend, rental vs. owned mix) to leadership.
Qualifications

Required

5+ years managing heavy equipment fleets, equipment operations, or in a similar superintendent/manager role. Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to direct complex diagnostics and repairs (diesel, hydraulics, electrical). Proven leadership experience managing mechanics, technicians, and/or equipment operators. Working knowledge of DOT regulations and transportation compliance (or CDL with strong DOT familiarity). Experience managing equipment budgets, purchase decisions, rentals, and maintenance costs. Safety-first mindset with familiarity in OSHA standards applicable to equipment and shops. Ability to coordinate across multiple projects and perform in a fast-paced, field-driven environment.
Preferred

Experience with major manufacturers (e.g., Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, etc.). Familiarity with fleet management or CMMS software (maintenance tracking, GPS/telematics, inventory). Formal training in diesel technology, hydraulics, or heavy equipment. Background in heavy civil, industrial, or infrastructure construction. Experience negotiating with OEMs, rental providers, and parts suppliers.

Pay: $100,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
