The Non-Ferrous Buyer & Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for identifying, inspecting, and processing incoming non-ferrous metals brought in for recycling. This role involves assessing and weighing materials, accurately categorizing them, and ensuring they are recorded correctly before placing them in designated areas for proper handling. Providing excellent customer service is essential, as this position requires interacting with the public, answering questions, and ensuring a smooth and efficient buyer-seller transaction.

Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy machinery and equipment, including but not limited to forklifts, backhoes, cranes, shears, front-end loaders, balers, shredders, and excavators.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



Ensures the quality of scrap being purchased is up to standard. Sorts material to sell as the correct commodity. Entering data into the computer for paying customers and inventory purposes. Ensures the weights being entered into the scrap purchasing system are accurate. Communicates via radio often with scale staff about vehicles that have dropped certain commodities off and any deducts from the loads before the customer is paid out. Safely and respectfully loading and unloading various types of trailers with confidence when assigned. Runs UBCS through the bailing system, ensures they are clean of any debris. Operates forklifts, backhoes, cranes, shears, front-end loaders, balers, shredders, and excavators. Responsible for maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Performs other duties as assigned or directed.

Education and/or Experience



High School diploma is preferred.

1-3 years' experience within our industry or closely related industry preferred.

Must have excellent open communication style to carry out ongoing dialogues in a way that creates trust and confidence within all levels of the company.

Language Skills



Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

Technology Skills



The incumbent must be familiar with the practical use of technology and computer programs such as email and other local used programs allowing the incumbent to utilize the technology to regularly communicate with others.

Mathematical Skills



Basic math skills including counting; rounding; and basic estimating of distance measurements. The ability to make accurate measurements using basic tools such as tape measures, rulers, and scales, etc.

Reasoning Ability



Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
