Job Description


Summary

Responsible for the inspections, maintenance and installation of landscape and flowerbed medians, public buildings, tree farms, and cemeteries. This includes litter and weed control, irrigation repair and installation, and seasonal color change outs in landscape beds and chemical applications. This job also includes planting and pruning trees.

Essential Functions and Other Important Duties

  • Operates medium to heavy sized motorized construction/maintenance equipment such as sweeper, tree spade, dump truck, hydrostatic mower, forklift, small ditch trencher, boom bucket truck, skid steer, backhoe, tractors with special attachments, tree chippers, pneumatic and steel wheel rollers in the performance of construction, maintenance, interstate mower and operates spraying equipment.
  • Operates a variety of small equipment such as various types of saws, hand tools, rakes, shovels, string trimmers, backpack sprayer, etc.; variety of nursery stock, bulbs, soil, mulch and pesticides.
  • Performs manual labor and various semi-skilled tasks incidental to equipment operation, such as locating and repairing water lines, identifying, assessing and resolving specific plant problems, such as damage due to disease, insects, drought and overwatering and treating the plant for such problems.
  • Inspects and checks operation of all equipment before and after use and reports problems to supervisor; performs minor equipment maintenance activities.
  • Performs duties of Crew Leader in emergencies or in relief capacity.
  • Helps train other operators and maintenance staff.
  • Responds to after hour callouts for high water, storm damage, and ice and snow removal/control.
  • Confers with customers regarding services problems or explanation of work performed as needed.
  • Assists customers with cemetery records, grave locations, plot sales, and monument placement.
  • Maintains accurate cemetery records.
  • Performs specialized repairs on all specialty equipment.
  • Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance.
Additional Duties:
  • Assists other divisions and departments when needed including tasks outside of normal responsibilities.
  • Responsible for setting up, working and tearing down special events and tournaments, including working some nights and weekends.
Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three years\' experience in the landscape industry and operation of construction and maintenance equipment such as backhoe, front end loader, skid steer, dump truck and spray equipment.
  • Texas Department of Agriculture noncommercial pesticide license category 3A.
  • Class A CDL or ability to obtain one within one (1) year of employment.

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

Preferences:
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Preference may be given to applicants that possess a Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide License or Irrigation technician license.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who possess a TNLA Nurseryman\'s license.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who possess a Class A CDL.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Must possess a valid Class \xe2\x80\x9cA\xe2\x80\x9d CDL driver\'s license with air brake endorsements OR must possess a valid Class C driver license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tank Vehicle endorsement within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must pass a drug test, driver\'s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must be able to work overtime when requested.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Texas Department of Agriculture Non-Commercial Applicators License or equivalent within 18 months of employment.
  • Ability to work a rotating work schedule. This includes nights and weekends.
  • Requires lifting up to 100 lbs.

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
The essential functions of this position require the use of light to medium sized motorized equipment such as dump truck, backhoe, skid steer, bucket truck and trencher while being proficient in the safe operations of power tools, including welders, power saws, power drills, etc.

Environmental Factors:
The essential functions of this position are performed primarily outdoors, employee will be exposed to extreme weather conditions, including freezing temperatures, temperatures over 100 degrees, rain, high humidity and seasonal allergens.
