Description

This position is required to perform skilled work in the maintenance, diagnosis, repair and overhaul of heavy gasoline, diesel and electric powered construction heavy equipment. This is a journeyman level position, working mostly independently with little supervision.

Examples of Duties

1. Inspect, diagnose, and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic problems on heavy equipment including: motor graders, loaders, excavators, bulldozers, cranes, forklifts, sanding equipment, heavy duty trucks, street sweeper, diesel powered generators, and other heavy duty equipment.
2. Overhaul, repair and adjust Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, Case, International Harvester, Cummins and John Deere engines; transmissions, differentials, clutches, final drives, steering and suspension systems, air and hydraulic brakes, drive lines and all types of hydraulic and pneumatic components such as pumps, valves, and cylinders.
3. Services heavy equipment in accordance with preventative maintenance schedules.
4. Troubleshoot and repair computerized and electronic control systems, using diagnostic equipment.
5. Perform welding repairs and fabrication.
6. Straighten bent frames, assemble sheet metal parts.
7. Perform tire changes and tire repairs on heavy equipment.
8. Assist with repairs of automobiles and pickup trucks, when needed.
9. Operate all shop tools and equipment for repairing and/or fabricating parts.
10. Keep maintenance shop work areas and tools- clean, organized and in good working order.
11. Order parts and supplies as needed per City procurement standards.
12. Complete, daily and weekly, work orders and heavy equipment maintenance and repair records.
13. Provide labor services as needed in other Public Works departments.

Typical Qualifications

Education:
1. High school diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED).
2. Prefer formal technical training or schooling in diesel and heavy equipment repair.
Experience:
1. A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a journeyman heavy duty equipment mechanic. Evidence of comparable experience can be substituted for journeyman experience.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge:
This position requires proficiency in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of the standard practices and procedures, theories of operation, materials, tools, and equipment used in the troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, including diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and all systems/components of equipment.
2. Procedures related to the repair of diesel and gasoline fuel systems and hydraulic systems.
3. Good understanding of DC electrical systems, and computer/electronic controls.
4. Basic knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and AKOSH (Alaska Occupational Safety and Health (AKOSH) standards, and safe work practices.

Skills and Abilities:
This position must demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
1. Ability to perform journeyman level work on heavy equipment, including accurately troubleshooting and completing minor through major repairs of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions.
2. Use of shop tools and equipment needed to perform job duties.
3. Operation of the most recent diagnostic equipment required for troubleshooting, adjusting and repairing engines, transmissions, abs brakes, air bags and hydraulics.
4. The ability to read, understand and follow detailed service manuals; and interpret schematics, electrical, hydraulic and other types of schematics of flow charts.
5. Welding skills in stick, mig, and gas welding in all positions. Experience with cutting torch and plasma cutter. Major and minor welding fabrications and repairs.
6. Basic computer skills.
7. Interact with the public in a courteous, helpful and professional manner.
8. Work with co-workers, outside agencies, and vendors in a professional manner.
