Position: Business Office/Billing Associate

Reports to: Business Office/Billing Supervisor

Job Classification: Non-Exempt

This position is responsible for ensuring and using appropriate and accurate billing procedures associated with services of The Eye Institute of Utah (EIU) and The Surgicare Center of Utah (SCU). This includes the ability to understand clinical and operative reports to identify appropriate billing codes are used. Each Billing Associate will be responsible for specifically assigned duties as determined by the Business Office/Billing Supervisor and the Administrators of EIU and SCU. This position plays a critical role in the financial success and health of EIU and SCU.

Job Duties

Enter all insurance payments, EOB information, insurance adjustments, and denials for EIU and SCU services. This includes off-site provider services, office-based procedures and services, (i.e. YAG, cross-linking, retina injections), and facility-based procedures.*
Accurately post patient and insurance payments and adjustments to the appropriate patient accounts daily.*
Submit insurance claim reviews and appeals as necessary.*
Take inbound calls for patient billing.*
Return billing office voicemail messages and return patient phone calls within 24 hours.*
Help in-office patients with account and billing questions*
Provide insurance allowable information to surgery schedulers when needed.*
Balance daily payment batches and provide all documentation to the accountant for balancing and deposit.*
Validate claim information, prepare and export claim batch files to clearing house.*
Ensures cash, check and credit card payments are secured until posted and forwarded to accountant.*
Work all accounts receivable to ensure maximum collection and minimum bad-debt*
Review fee schedules for accuracy.*
Enter clinic and surgery charges. Review codes for accuracy for EIU and SCU charges daily*
Reviews patient and insurance accounts for accuracy, appropriateness, overpayment and processes necessary refunds.*
Maintains positive working relations with third party insurance companies*
Reviews upcoming office schedule and flags accounts that need balances collected.*
Work other billing tasks as needed while in the process of other job duties.*

Job Requirements/Qualifications

Minimum of at least 3 years of experience in Healthcare billing/coding*
Thorough understanding of ophthalmology terminology and reporting.*
Experience with third party insurances and understanding of reimbursement schedules.*
Has a thorough knowledge of CMS/Medicare, HIPAA and other government regulations, rules and policies as it pertains to billing and collections.*
Maintains thorough and up-to-date knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding.*
Exhibits a positive attitude and is flexible in accepting work assignments and priorities.*
