Continuous Recruitment, Statewide: The Division of Personnel (DOP) anticipates several vacancies in the near future for this classification. This classification has positions in every area of the state and with multiple state agencies. Make sure you mark in your county selection any county you would be willing to work in or commute to so you can be placed on the proper register.

Under general supervision, at the full-performance level, these positions perform paraprofessional work assisting professional staff in the care, treatment, habilitation and rehabilitation of patients and residents at state-operated facilities or in a community setting. These positions act as lead workers or charge assistants in assigning, scheduling and reviewing the work of Health Service Workers and Health Service Trainees. These positions assist professional staff in providing basic rehabilitative treatment in such areas as physical or occupational therapy, recreational therapy, restorative therapy or similar areas. Travel may be required. Perform related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

These positions are distinguished by the assignment of lead worker duties or by the assignment of duties to develop and/or monitor treatment plans within a specific discipline at the facility. They may be required to participate in additional training such as physical therapy assistance or basic education techniques. These positions have some latitude of action in the development of treatment plans; however, guidelines and patient psychosocial development determine the parameter of individual care.

Examples of Work

Participate in a formal training program to develop knowledge and abilities required for career growth and development.

Lead and perform required personal care and hygiene services such as bathing, grooming, dressing and feeding patients.

Teach patients basic skills of daily living habits such as cleanliness, personal hygiene, dressing, eating, etc.

Provide training and direction to assigned staff and patients; serve as a role model to staff and patients; prepare work schedules and make assignments.

Oversee and participate in planned recreational and social programs.

Provide basic nursing care such as taking temperature, blood pressure, and pulse readings; apply soaks and compresses and clean sores and wounds; perform routine treatment and first-aid under the direction of a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or physician.

Confer with supervisors and professional staff regarding problems, patient behavior, and assignment and scheduling of personnel.

Assist professional staff in the implementation of established therapeutic treatment plans; serve as a member of the therapeutic treatment team to facilitate change in patients\' behavior.

Develop individual treatment plans for patients in assigned specialty area; record plans in patient records and oversee or lead patients in activities, testing or life skills training.

Follow physicians\' or therapists\' direction in providing hands-on therapy or care in assigned area.

Lead and perform duties necessary to maintain a safe, clean and orderly living and work area; report needed repairs to maintenance staff; recommend needed equipment and supplies; order, distribute and inventory supplies.

Observe, record and report patients\' behavior, attitude and physical condition and report significant changes to proper staff.

Teach patients skill-building in such areas as independent travel, self-administration of medication, crafts, money management, self-expression, nutrition, crisis management and social intervention.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the concepts of behavioral health, mental health, health disorders and related physical conditions and treatment approaches.

Knowledge of simple nursing care, first-aid, personal care and environmental hygiene.

Knowledge of the policies and procedures of the department, facility or service entity.

Ability to lead and train workers engaged in the care, treatment and rehabilitation of patients.

Ability to provide basic nursing care, personal care and hygiene.

Ability to perform established treatment activities.

Ability to teach patients eating, bathing, dressing, grooming and other self-care skills.

Ability to participate with professional staff in the design and implementation of treatment and programmatic activities.

Ability to observe the rights and personal dignity of patients.

Ability to observe, record and report patient behavior, attitude and physical condition.

Ability to perform simple arithmetic.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients and other employees.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: High school diploma or the equivalent.

AND

Experience: Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid or volunteer experience in the care, treatment and development of patients or residents of a healthcare facility.

OR

Substitution: Certification or registration as a Nursing Assistant or Nurse Aide may substitute for the required training and one (1) year of the required experience.

Special Requirement for Veterans Nursing Facility, Long-Term Care Facilities (Hopemont Hospital, Lakin Hospital, John Manchin Sr. Health Care Center and Jackie Withrow Hospital) and the long-term unit located at Welch Community Hospital: Certification or registration as a Nursing Assistant or Nurse Aide.
