UNIT: DiMenna-Nyselius Library

BASIC FUNCTION: The Head of Systems plans and implements services that enable user-friendly access to the teaching and learning resources provided by the DiMenna-Nyselius Library at Fairfield University. This position is primarily responsible for coordinating the usage, development, support, and maintenance of the Library\xe2\x80\x99s discovery and systems infrastructure, including the Integrated Library System (Alma/Primo), DigitalCommons@Fairfield (the institutional repository), EZProxy, OCLC ILLiad resource sharing software and other discovery tools.

The Head of Systems provides leadership and vision to deliver new services and improve access to resources as well as contributes to a collaborative vision for library systems. Within the library, this position will work with colleagues across the organization to optimize routines and improve workflows within library systems. The Head of Systems also establishes and maintains effective cooperative and collaborative relationships with a variety of campus partners in support of library and campus-wide technological goals.

This position will coach, mentor, and coordinate the work of the Web and Technology Librarian.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS: Ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends as required for meetings and special events.

EDUCATION: Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree and relevant experience supporting library systems.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE: At least two years of experience with library systems or electronic resources OR any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education. Demonstrated knowledge of library discovery services that support the operations and initiatives of academic libraries. Ability to initiate, plan and carry out projects, both independently and as a member of a team. Ability to consult with others, incorporate learned technical knowledge, and make independent decisions. Evidence of strong professional communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Graduate degree in Library & Information Science (MLS or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program. Two or more years of professional library experience, preferably in an academic library. Experience with library systems used at DiMenna-Nyselius Library, including Alma, Primo VE, Primo Analytics, ILLiad, EZproxy, or Digital Commons. Certification as an Ex Libris Alma/Primo Administrator. Working knowledge of one or more programming languages such as PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, etc. Previous management/supervisory experience.

SUPERVISION OF PERSONNEL: Web and Technology Librarian

REPORTS TO: Associate Dean for Technical Services and the Budget

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Manages all aspects of library information technology including the performance, configuration, and integrity of library systems and optimization of routines and functionality to improve staff workflows and users\xe2\x80\x99 experiences through public interfaces. This includes:

  • configuring and maintaining ILS (Alma/PrimoVE), ILL (ILLiad), archival (DigitalCommons), proxy (EZProxy), and other library systems,

  • troubleshooting system and openURL problems,

  • serving as primary liaison with system vendors,

  • serving as system administrator for all library servers,

  • attending and participating in vendor users\xe2\x80\x99 group meetings to stay apprised of developments,

  • improving system integration,

  • documenting system configurations, processes, and updates,

  • implementing new technologies,

  • coordinating software upgrades,

  • supporting the maintenance and troubleshooting of patron authentication services,

  • ensuring system security and privacy of user data contained therein.



Provides library systems technology leadership, expertise, and management within the Library and contributes to a collaborative vision for library systems. This includes:

  • participating in strategic planning for Library information technology needs,

  • participating in the evaluation and implementation of emerging technologies and services,

  • investigating and testing emerging technologies and products, evaluating potential Library uses, and presenting and training new technologies to Library staff,

  • helping to determine current and future Library information technology and infrastructure requirements to meet customer information needs and recommending solutions, actions, and changes based on changing circumstances and needed adjustments,

  • assisting in coordinating departmental projects and initiatives,

  • acting as the technical contact for various library systems and providing customized reporting of usage.


Establishes and maintains effective cooperative and collaborative relationships with a variety of campus partners in support of library and campus-wide technological goals. This includes:

  • acting as the Library\xe2\x80\x99s primary liaison to University-wide ITS for all technology matters,

  • working to maximize automation between Library and University systems.


Supervises and supports staff. This includes:

  • recruiting, hiring, and training staff,

  • coaching and mentoring staff, as appropriate,

  • meeting with all staff members individually and as a department/unit on a regular basis,

  • overseeing the flow and quality of work, and schedules for staff,

  • communicating effectively with staff concerning department and library-wide matters,

  • evaluating staff performance.



Participates in the growth, development and professional work of the Library. This includes:

  • embodying the mission and values of the Library and the University in our everyday work life,

  • communicating effectively with supervisor concerning pertinent Library and/or University matters,

  • assisting in the discussion and formulation of policies and procedures,

  • acting as a responsible participant in staff, committee, and/or task force meetings,

  • attending and participating in Library and University events,

  • monitoring developments in librarianship through attendance at meetings and workshops, membership in professional associations, and the reading of professional literature,

  • promoting and communicating the value of the Library to the community.
