About The Swampscott Tides
The Swampscott Tides is an independent nonprofit local news organization committed to informing and engaging the public with fact-based coverage of community issues, culture and events in the town of Swampscott, MA.
Position Overview
The Swampscott Tides is seeking a half-time staff reporter to help expand our coverage of local news and events. This position will report to and support the Managing Editor by contributing original reporting, timely coverage, and in-depth stories that reflect the character and priorities of the town.
This is a hands-on, community-focused role ideal for someone who thrives on local storytelling, works independently, and feels comfortable working in a range of coverage areas.
We are urgently looking to fill this position.
Key Responsibilities
Report, write, and file accurate, engaging stories on a range of local topics -- from town government and schools to community events, profiles, and sports.
Attend and cover public meetings, producing clear, digestible summaries and follow-up stories.
Respond quickly to breaking news and meet tight deadlines with clean copy.
Contribute both short-turn stories and longer, in-depth features.
Take basic photographs to accompany stories.
Use social media to find story leads, share coverage, and engage with readers.
Represent The Swampscott Tidesin the community -- attending local events, building sources, and maintaining strong relationships with residents and officials.
Work collaboratively with the Managing Editor and accept edits with professionalism.
Maintain excellent news judgment and attention to detail.
Qualifications
Required:
At least 2+ years experience working in local journalism
Proven reporting and writing ability with strong command of AP Style.
Comfortable working independently and managing multiple assignments.
Ability to work nights and weekends as needed (for meetings, events, and breaking news).
Reliable transportation to travel to meetings and events throughout Swampscott.
Familiarity with WordPress or other CMS platforms.
Curiosity, integrity, and a passion for local journalism.
Must provide 3-5 writing examples of published articles.
Preferred:
Basic video or audio editing skills for web and social use.
Familiarity with public records, budgets, and open meeting documents.
Understanding of data-driven or accountability reporting.
Knowledge of or interest in the North Shore area.
Work Environment
This is a hybrid role based in Swampscott, MA with an office located in Salem, MA. In-person attendance is expected for meetings, events, and occasional office collaboration. Flexibility for some remote work.
