Description

This position is to perform all aspects of bed maintenance. This is to include chemical spraying, mulching, hedge and shrub trimming, tree pruning, mowing, weed trimming and edging. This will also include supervision and training of employees and temporary workers. Work requires the ability to read and maintain records, work orders, time sheets and various technical manuals and labels. Job plan and project future maintenance requirements. Supervises emergency response.

Departmental Hiring Salary: $38,440 - $40,362

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Supervises personnel and operations by generating reports, tracking employee time, writing requisitions, addressing public concerns and complaints, forwarding information to other departments, resolving problems, coordinating work with vendors, calibrating equipment, scheduling and assigning duties, allocating equipment, delivering and receiving equipment, checking and maintaining vehicles, grounds and materials, preparing reports, timesheets, materials and equipment sheets, verifying the quality of work, ensuring that safety precautions are followed, training employees, conducting performance evaluations, providing information, assisting with job orders, distributing supplies, providing emergency response, preparing equipment for monthly inspection and transporting workers to facilities.
  • Maintains facilities by performing litter clean up.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience

Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.

Required:
  • One year of experience in groundskeeper and supervisory or lead experience.
Preferred:
  • One year of landscape, grounds maintenance, or waste operations with supervisory or lead experience.
Additional Information & Requirements
  • Valid Driver\'s License required.
  • Commercial Class B Driver\'s License preferred.
  • A Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Pesticide Applications Certificate 3A & 3B.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification within six months of employment
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

Work Location: 2839 Dana Street Norfolk Virginia 23509
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, 40 hours per week.

  • Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant\'s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
