HDR is looking for a Geologist I to join our Transportation Business Group. This position may be based out of any of the following HDR offices in North Carolina: Raleigh, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, or Wilmington. This individual will work under the direction of a licensed PE and be responsible for the geological interpretation and evaluation of the soil and rock conditions to be used in the analysis and design of infrastructure projects including but not limited to roadways, retaining walls, bridges, buildings, dams, soils and rock slopes, asphalt and concrete pavements, etc. Opportunities will exist to participate on high profile infrastructure projects in the Southeast and across the United States (travel is required for site visits). They will also review boring logs, laboratory data, and design plans for a variety of geological and geotechnical tasks such as investigation planning, soil and rock slope stability, existing rock slope evaluation and rating, and rockfall analysis. They\xe2\x80\x99ll prepare drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports, and be expected to coordinate with project managers to implement measures to successfully meet all project goals and objectives. On a day-to-day basis, the Geologist I will be expected to:

  • Travel throughout the Southeast to perform oversight of drilling operations, including logging and classifying soil and rock materials in accordance with applicable standards
  • Set up field exploration programs and coordinate with subcontractors
  • Develop subsurface inventory or investigation reports
  • Have strong oral and written communication skills
  • Be capable of working independently or in a team environment assisting geotechnical staff
  • Perform assignments exercising judgement in evaluation, selection, and modification of standard engineering geology techniques and procedures
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Geology, Earth Science, Hydrogeology or closely related field
  • Ability to assess and classify soil and rock samples to determine geologic type
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Self-starter with excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures)
  • Ability to travel throughout the Southeast, mainly in NC
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS in Geology preferred
  • Geology experience in the transportation infrastructure industry, specifically geotechnical-related engineering experience is strongly preferred
  • GIT certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months strongly preferred
  • Experience with NCDOT Geotechnical Engineering Unit policies and procedures strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with CADD software (MicroStation) preferred, gINT or OpenGround software, and Microsoft office programs strongly preferred
  • Local candidates are preferred
