Hale Makua Health Services is a Maui based non-profit that improves the well-being of those in its care through compassionate personalized health services. We are devoted to helping Maui\'s Elders live their best lives. Hale Makua\'s Kahului location is a 254-bed nursing facility.

Food and health go hand in hand. As a food service intern in healthcare, you are part of the first line of defense to ensure there is a correct menu and order for each of our residents, as well as any special diets set up by our dietitians, doctors, and therapists. Healthcare food service workers help with the overall experience for our residents at Hale Makua.

Program Highlights:\xe2\x80\x8b
This internship opportunity will run for six to eight weeks during the summer from June 4th, 2023 - July 29th, 2023\xe2\x80\x8b

• Interns are required to provide 130 hours over the duration of the internship program\xe2\x80\x8b

• Interns are required to participate in meal preparation with the food service team as well as other expert-led trainings\xe2\x80\x8b

• Interns will receive a $2,000.00 stipend upon successful completion of the internship program\xe2\x80\x8b

Learning Objectives:\xe2\x80\x8b

• Work effectively in all departments within the Food Service\xe2\x80\x8b

• After a lesson in menu planning, apply knowledge of the menu planning process\xe2\x80\x8b

• Understand special dietary needs and their relation to conditions or chronic illnesses of residents at Hale Makua\xe2\x80\x8b

• Understand different feeding therapies at Hale Makua\xe2\x80\x8b

• Obtain a Food Safety Certification (if not currently certified)\xe2\x80\x8b

• Obtain a Food Handler Certification (if not currently certified)

Student Eligibility:\xe2\x80\x8b

• Applications are open to:\xe2\x80\x8b

• Current Maui County high school students (entering grades 11-12), who are in the Culinary CTE Pathway\xe2\x80\x8b

• Current students enrolled in UH Maui College\'s Culinary Arts Program\xe2\x80\x8b

Submit a completed Food Service Internship Application including a resume by May 31, 2023, 4 PM HST.\xe2\x80\x8b

• Obtain recommendation from your Culinary CTE teacher\xe2\x80\x8b

• Must be available up to 19-hours a week for six to eight weeks during the summer\xe2\x80\x8b

• Complete an internship post-assessment survey\xe2\x80\x8b

• Full program participation and attendance is required to receive the $2,000.00 stipend which is paid out at the end of the internship\xe2\x80\x8b
