In this position, you will be working in the Colorado Springs Support Services department on fire apparatus, heavy equipment, light duty trucks, a variety of passenger vehicles, firefighting tools and equipment to support the Fire Department operations. The Fire Department's fleet includes powertrains by Cummins, Ford, and others to a lesser extent. You will be required to perform inspections, run diagnostics, order parts, and perform repairs.
Essential Job Functions

the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:Perform routine preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and vehicles
Inspect, diagnose, and isolate defective, missing, or malfunctioning components of mechanical, hydraulic, fueling, electrical, and pneumatic systems
Identify, record, and source parts
Coordinate service writing and parts acquisition with supervisor
Use software to initiate, record and track fleet work
Knowledge of:
Diesel and gas engine technologies
Standards including but not limited to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), manufacturer specifications, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines
Proper usage of hand, electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic tools, and other specialty equipment
Operational characteristics of a variety of automotive transmissions and gasoline/ diesel powered engines including but not limited to chassis, drive train, and body components including latches, fasteners, glass, and environment control systems
Ability to:
Perform light fabrication or repair to existing parts or sub-components
Perform detailed diagnostic testing with a variety of methods to include the use of modern scan tools
Perform mobile maintenance and repair functions as needed
Safely work with heavy equipment components that can be heavy to lift or hot to touch
Communicate clearly and concisely, to customers, staff, supervisors, and vendors. Communication methods include interpersonal, telephone, by computer-based programs, and in writing
Establish and maintain effective working relationships
This position requires technicians to wear appropriate safety personal protective equipment and work in a shop environment around vehicles and heavy equipment with exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, and gases. This position requires manual and physical dexterity and the ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods and to lift and carry 50 pounds occasionally.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED supplemented by specialized training in automotive or heavy equipment repair and maintenance
Three (3) years of full-time experience in fleet vehicle or equipment repair and maintenance
Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid non-probationary Colorado Driver's License not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
Possess upon hire two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification tests
Possess or obtain within 12 months of hire certification as an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician
Within two years of hire achieve certification as an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Medium/Heavy Trucks

Experience or training with fire service-related vehicle, tools, and equipment service/maintenance including requisite certifications
Experience installing mobile radios and in-vehicle laptop computers
Experience safely operating small power tools
