Job Description

Position Purpose


Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Chief of Logistics, the Fleet Services Supervisor is responsible for coordinating, supervising, and performing all maintenance and repair activities involving Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS (AMFEMS) vehicles and apparatus.


This dual-role position combines leadership and hands-on mechanical responsibilities to ensure that all fire apparatus, ambulances, specialty vehicles, and support equipment remain safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable safety regulations, manufacturer specifications, and NFPA standards.


The Fleet Services Supervisor provides technical expertise, oversees shop operations, directs assigned mechanics, and ensures readiness and serviceability of all fleet assets in support of emergency response operations.


Minimum Qualifications


Members must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license prior to operating any vehicle owned by the Anchorage Middletown Fire and EMS. The license must be a full operator's license. Instructional or temporary learning permits do not meet this requirement. High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum five (5) years of experience in heavy vehicle or emergency apparatus maintenance. Minimum two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or lead mechanic role. Valid driver's license and ability to qualify under District insurance requirements. Class B CDL or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire. Proficiency in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic diagnostic and repair procedures. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical manuals, schematics, and manufacturer specifications. Knowledge of NFPA 1911, OSHA, and DOT standards for vehicle maintenance and inspections.
Desirable Qualifications


ASE or EVT certifications (or willingness to obtain within designated timeframe). Formal training in diesel technology, heavy equipment, or fire apparatus repair. Welding and fabrication skills. Experience with fleet maintenance management software. Familiarity with emergency lighting, siren, and communications systems.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks


Supervision & Leadership Oversee daily shop operations and supervise assigned mechanics and technicians. Assign and monitor work orders to ensure timely, efficient completion of maintenance and repairs. Lead by example through active participation in mechanical and diagnostic work. Provide on-the-job training, mentorship, and technical guidance to shop personnel. Evaluate staff performance and recommend training or development opportunities. Serve as acting Fleet Coordinator in their absence, making operational and scheduling decisions.
Maintenance Oversight


Coordinate and perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of fire apparatus, ambulances, command units, and specialty vehicles. Diagnose, service, and repair complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Conduct inspections, testing, and adjustments to ensure operational reliability and compliance with NFPA standards. Perform and verify quality control checks on completed repairs, including road testing. Maintain shop readiness, tool functionality, and adherence to all safety protocols.
Workflow & Shop Management


Monitor shop workflow and prioritize work based on operational needs and service demands. Maintain adequate inventory of parts, tools, and consumables; request resupply when needed. Coordinate with vendors for specialized repairs or contracted services. Participate in equipment evaluations and make recommendations for upgrades or replacements. Support emergency or after-hours repair operations to maintain fleet readiness.
Compliance & Safety Standards


Ensure all maintenance activities comply with NFPA, DOT, and OSHA regulations. Enforce safety protocols for shop operations, PPE usage, and environmental standards. Inspect and verify that all vehicles meet required documentation and certification standards. Ensure accurate maintenance documentation is entered into the fleet management system.
Collaboration & Communication


Serve as liaison between Fleet Services, Operations, and Logistics leadership. Communicate vehicle status, downtime, and urgent repair priorities to command staff. Coordinate vendor and manufacturer support for technical or warranty issues. Represent the Logistics Division in fleet-related meetings as directed.
Special Position Requirements


Ability to lift and move parts or equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. Work involves bending, climbing, kneeling, and working in confined spaces. Exposure to noise, fumes, heat, cold, and chemicals typical of a maintenance shop. Must wear and maintain appropriate PPE at all times. Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. May be required to work evenings, weekends, or respond during emergencies.
