Education and Experience: A High School diploma, GED or higher and six (6) years of journey level automotive or diesel mechanic experience, including two (2) years of supervisory or lead work experience.
Licenses and Certificates: Some positions may require a Texas Class "C" Driver's License, Class "B" Commercial Driver's License or equivalent from another state.
Special Requirements: Positions requiring a CDL or positions of a safety sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.
General Purpose

Under direction, plan, direct, supervise and oversee work of one or more organizational units and their operating facilities that provide maintenance, repair, upkeep and related fleet services.
Typical Duties
------------------
Manage fleet maintenance operations as delegated. Involves: Receive requests for maintenance. Identify nature and scope of need. Establish work priorities, assign tasks and monitor work progress. Organize and coordinate work flow. Coordinate and schedule routine, emergency and other equipment repair and maintenance services. Determine the proper and most cost effective method of servicing and repairing equipment. Review, monitor and determine quality of work performed. Inspect and identify deficiencies and additional service, repair and/or maintenance needs. Maintain and review maintenance and repair logs, records, reports and files. Test vehicles and equipment prior to release.
Perform and conduct various administrative responsibilities. Involves: Set goals and monitor progress. Evaluate operations. Identify, create and introduce improvements to work flow, training, equipment and other operational areas. Respond to inquiries, questions and requests for information. Draft and provide written and oral responses. Monitor expenditures. Monitor and maintain inventory of parts, supplies, materials and associated items. Review and recommend requests for expenditures. Review and recommend as appropriate requests for new and/or replacement equipment, supplies, materials and related items. As assigned/required, develop specifications, evaluate responses and participate in the bid process. Interact with federal, state and local law enforcement officers, public officials, contractors, other departments or the general public to provide accurate information to inquiries, resolve problems and respond to complaints, including complaints from individuals who may be irate.
Perform section general and fiscal administration. Involves: Participate in setting performance goals and priorities that contribute to departmental mission. Prepare recommendations and justify division program and capital funding to assist in preparation of section budget and control expenditures. Oversee preparation of activity reports.
Supervise assigned supervisory and non-supervisory staff. Involves: Interviewing applicants and as authorized, hiring or recommending hiring and employees warranting for promotion. Assign, delegate, review, inspect and accept work completed. Guide task performance. Train and develop employees. Prepare employees' performance appraisals and review those of subordinates. Approve sick leave, vacation leave and overtime. Recall employees to work in emergencies. Recommend merit increases. Resolve grievances. Provide recommendations in the areas of employee discipline, suspension and/or termination.
Perform related duties as required. Involves: Perform duties of immediate supervisor or subordinate personnel as necessary to ensure continuity of operations during absences.
