Working knowledge of fisheries science principles, fish sampling methods, and water safety are all important job qualifications. A combination of excellent work habits, technical ability, and applied knowledge is necessary for effectiveness in this position. Incumbent will be required to work closely with local FWP staff, researchers from Montana State University (MSU), partner agencies, NGOs, and local landowners.



The position requires good health and physical condition. At times, this is a physically demanding job involving backpack and mobile-electrode electrofishing in small and large steep-gradient streams and working from manually powered watercraft on flowing waters. The incumbent must have the ability and willingness to work in and around water in adverse and hazardous conditions, including inclement weather. The work schedule will be variable, requiring work outside of normal business days and hours and may involve overnight stays in remote field locations for multiple days.

Job Duties:




The incumbent will assist FWP and MSU staff with mortality and recruitment studies on brown and rainbow trout including radio telemetry studies on the Beaverhead, Big Hole, Madison, and Ruby rivers. Additional responsibilities will include spring and fall electrofishing efforts as well as working with fish health staff on additional sampling efforts as needed. Experience using PIT and floy tags is preferred. The technician will assist with data entry (Microsoft Word and Excel) and management as well as equipment maintenance outside of fieldwork.

Responsibilities:



Assist with the survey and inventory of diverse fish species including Bull Trout, Westslope Cutthroat Trout, Mountain Whitefish, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, and other native and non-native species.
Operate equipment such as electrofishing gear, drift boats, jet boats, and four-wheel drive vehicles.
Conduct maintenance, purchasing, repairing, assembling, cleaning, and testing of field equipment to ensure they are field ready.
Record, enter, and summarize ecological/biological data using standard software and existing databases; assist in the preparation and review of reports.
Serve as a crew leader for day-to-day operations; provide leadership, supervision, and training for co-workers, interns, and volunteers.
Perform other duties as assigned including education and outreach

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):




The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in fish biology, fish and wildlife management, ecology, biology, and one year of job-related experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
