The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a long term non-permanent Fish and Wildlife Technician 4 located in Palmer!
What you will be doing:
Under the direction of the Wildlife Physiologist 2, this position will serve as a crew lead on one of three calf-rearing teams. The primary duties of this position include: around-the-clock care and rearing of caribou calves (e.g., bottle feeding, health checks, maintaining and cleaning equipment, training), provisioning of native plants and commercial food and water for moose and caribou, supervising and training lower-level technicians in the collection of biological data and animal rearing and training methods; organizing and compiling information on calf milk intake and body mass for use in reports; operating power tools, chain saws, ATVs, and other farm equipment. Secondary duties include training and supervising lower-level staff on facility maintenance (e.g., tree removal, fence repair, cleaning barns and pastures).

The working conditions you can expect:
The position is based in Palmer, AK. The incumbent will provide daily care to captive animals and will work on facility improvements and maintenance, with occasional opportunities for fieldwork to collect lichens for caribou. Most work will occur outdoors. Hours will be irregular and include weekends, evenings, and holidays for the duration of the position. During the bottle-rearing phase of work, time off requests will be limited and may not exceed 1 week of vacation that must be approved in advance by the supervisor. Covid restrictions apply to animal work.
