Position Details

General Statement

The University Business Services (UBS) Accounting Office provides accounting and business services for all components of the University. UBS works to ensure that business transactions are conducted and reported efficiently, effectively, and in accordance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures. This position will perform advanced accounting functions in the central accounting office of the University, including preparation and review of general ledger journal entries, financial statement schedules, and other reporting subject to audit and/or submission to third parties. This position will be cross-trained with other duties within the UBS Accounting office.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and monitor various university programs and projects in accordance with internal controls, university policies and various regulations on a state, local, and federal level.
  • Create general ledger journal entries and financial schedules subject to audit and/or submission to third parties.
  • Prepare, summarize, and analyze financial information on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Reconcile accounts and prepare specific journal entries, including year-end journal entries.
  • Assist, train, and guide other MSU campuses and departments with issues or questions, ensuring University-wide compliance with policies and guidelines.
  • Assist other staff in the accounting office which may include initiating and completing inter-unit journals with other State agencies, administering the purchasing card program, monitoring transactions made on MSU\'s four campuses\' accounts receivable billing functions to outside vendors, and responding to questions from other UBS work units.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills * Bachelor\'s degree in accounting or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, accounting practices and financial reporting.
  • Successful experience gathering, analyzing and reconciling substantial amounts of financial data with a high degree of detail and accuracy.
  • Successful experience using analytical or interpretive processes and use of independent decision making to solve problems and resolve account differences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Excel to sort, analyze, format and summarize financial information.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills * Demonstrated experience with a complex accounting system.
  • Experience developing new processes and/or procedures for continuing compliance with changing regulations and to prevent errors or strengthen internal controls.
  • Demonstrated experience with fund accounting.

  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
