General Description:



Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) invites applications for qualified individuals to join our faculty to support the mission and vision of the largest institution of higher education in Virginia. The primary responsibility of a faculty member at NOVA is to provide quality instruction for the DMS program. NOVA faculty are expected to excel in teaching strategies and classroom management that fully engage students in a classroom, laboratory, or online platform, and engage students in individual conferences and related activities. NOVA faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity in order to build stronger citizens within the community. All faculty must be available to teach day, evening, and weekend classes at any of the College's campuses or off-site locations.



Duties and Tasks:



Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching courses offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats. Full-time 9-month teaching faculty positions carry a normal teaching load of 12-15 credit hours and 15-20 contact hours per semester. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, participate in curriculum development, and maintain currency in their discipline.



Essential Functions

:

NOVA faculty are expected to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports in a timely manner; teach the courses using established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and college duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations; answer emails in a responsible fashion; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.





KSA's/Required Qualifications


KSA's:

Ability to supervise all aspects of the Surgical Tech program including the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of the program. Able to assists with recruitment of faculty and students. Ability to develop and participate on the curriculum advisory committee of the program. Ability to develop, evaluate, and revise curriculum to ensure that the program standards meet VCCS, ARC/STSA accreditation, and NOVA standards. Ability to prepare documentation for programmatic curriculum reports and work with the Academic Dean for any catalog/curricular changes. Ability to assist with the admissions process for students to the Surgical Tech program in collaboration with Student Services. Ability to provide annually update, analyze and assess the programmatic goals and outcomes through an established formal ongoing programmatic assessment process. Able to interact with community partners to expand clinical opportunities for students. Able to orient students to general policies and procedures of the Surgical Tech program. Ability to develop programmatic policies and procedures for the Surgical Tech program. Able to ensures that the students are meeting the program requirements to graduate. Able to provide Surgical Tech program student advising. Ability to hold required student engagement hours. Able to attend divisional and college meetings.

Required Qualifications

Associate degree awarded by a regionally accredited institution. Completion of undergraduate surgical technology program that is accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accrediting agency for education programs in surgical technology. Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Certification must be active and is required as a condition for hire and for continued employment if hired. A minimum of five (5) years of full-time experience working in the operating room in the scrub role, as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both types listed experience. Qualifying experience must have been performed within the past ten (10) years. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent. Must have education or experience in instructional methodology, curriculum design, and program planning. Active, unexpired Commonwealth of Virginia licensure as a certified surgical technologist, with no restrictions, is required as a condition for hire and for continued employment if hired. If current licensure/certification is with another state or is not active, then you must be able obtain or renew licensure/certification with the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Associate degree in the teaching field. Degree must have been awarded by a regionally accredited institution and by an institution whose surgical technology program is accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accrediting agency for education programs in surgical technology. Minimum of five (5) years of recent teaching experience in a surgical technology program; Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in both the didactic and clinical settings, including course development, student assessment, and course evaluations; and experience in curriculum development, use of multiple teaching strategies, and test construction. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and work with a diverse student population. Demonstrated ability to incorporate technology routinely into instructional and faculty responsibilities.
