This position falls within our Facilities Division, which maintains approximately 130,000 square feet of buildings, 400,000 gallons of pools, and a one-million gallon lake at Barney Schwartz Park. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented and dependable, as well as have experience in construction, modification, maintenance, and facility repair. Facilities Maintenance Specialist I: $21.58 - $27.38 per hour | $44,880.94 - $56,949.62 annually
Facilities Maintenance Specialist II: $24.30 - $30.84 per hour | $50,547.38 - $64,143.56 annually Distinguishing Characteristics
Maintenance Specialist I is the entry-level in this class series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn City facilities, use of tools and equipment and a wide variety of practices and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining the knowledge, skills, and experience, and demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.

Maintenance Specialist II is the experienced journey level in this class series capable of performing a wide variety of work to ensure that the City facilities and infrastructure are maintained in a safe and effective working condition. Responsibilities include performing all operational and maintenance activities in the assigned area.

The housing market is robust and offers a wide array of housing choices including new neighborhoods, houses with acreage, infill, and charming Victorian homes, with a median home price of about $634,500. Paso Robles also has excellent schools, both public and private. Approximately half an hour away is the nationally ranked Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, and within the city of Paso Robles is Cuesta College, North County Campus.

Typical Duties

  • Participate in the construction and repair of interior and exterior building features including framing, cabinetry, plumbing, structural, and finish features in accordance with existing codes and laws
  • Perform repairs, installation, and maintenance work in cabinetry, metal fabrication, modular furniture, and flooring
  • Install, adjust, repair, inspect, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain a wide variety of HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including forced air furnaces, boilers, water pumps, chillers, air conditioning units, exhaust fans, air filters, compressors, cooling towers, heat exchangers, valves, and controllers
  • Perform skilled facility maintenance work, including general maintenance and repair work to electrical fixtures, including lighting, outlets, wiring, and panels
  • Install, repair, and maintain domestic water supply, drainage plumbing, and related fixtures using copper, galvanized, iron and PVC pipe techniques
  • Service and maintain pools, evaluate water samples, complete chemical treatment adjustment to pool water, and monitor and repair pool equipment
  • Perform routine custodial work and preventative maintenance
  • Operate and care for a variety of hand tools and power equipment, including wrenches, screwdrivers, saws, drills and carpentry equipment
  • Operate metal shop fabrication equipment for the use of gas or arc welding to cut, heat, weld or braze
  • Support the logistics surrounding City-wide special events
  • Determine the type of materials and supplies to be used for each project, purchase from established suppliers with appropriate authorization and prepare for use
  • Inspect City buildings, grounds, and equipment for maintenance and repair needs and safety concerns
  • Maintain computerized and manual records related to service performed, interpret information, adjust maintenance schedules, complete follow-up on required maintenance and repair and maintain program documentation
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Must be available for regular standby assignments (be ready to respond/arrive to calls for service within 30 minutes) and work emergency overtime as required and in accordance with existing Memorandum of Understanding. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and with exposure to traffic, fumes, odors, dust and potentially hazardous chemicals and conditions.

Employment Standards & Special Requirements

Knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices, tools, and materials for maintaining and repairing infrastructure, systems, and facilities
  • Methods and procedures used in carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, mechanical, welding, and other trades
  • Construction materials, tools, and equipment, and their safe use
  • Systems of lighting controls, plumbing repair and installation, electrical, mechanical, and structural construction, HVAC system control with program management, playground equipment regulations and repair, and pool operation and repair
  • Basic record keeping and mathematics
  • Safety equipment and safe work methods and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals
  • Applicable federal, state and local codes and regulations
Ability to:
  • Establish a safe work area and coordinate activities with employees and the public, as safety rules require
  • Perform semi-skilled facility maintenance work, including general maintenance and repair work to electrical fixtures, wiring and panels, appliances, plumbing fixtures, water heaters and boilers, water pumps and valves, and structural and cosmetic building features
  • Weld in a manner appropriate to the typical construction and facility maintenance repair tasks
  • Perform skilled construction, modification, maintenance and repair work on assigned systems, facilities, and equipment
  • Perform heavy labor
  • Set up and operate a traffic area construction zone, including cones, barricades, and flagging as required
  • Effectively interact with the public to answer questions, explain applicable laws, rules, and regulations, and investigate complaints
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair computerized electrical and mechanical controls, lighting control systems, and life and safety telemetry alarm systems
  • Determine materials and supplies required for repair
  • Skillfully and safely use tools and equipment related to the work
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and perform simple math calculations
  • Maintain accurate logs and basic written records of work performed
  • Work independently or in a team situation and maintain effective working relationships

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be equivalent to graduation from high school and:

Facilities Maintenance Specialist I: One year of construction, maintenance, or repair experience related to the assigned work.

Facilities Maintenance Specialist II: Three years of semi-skilled construction, maintenance, or repair experience related to the work assigned.

Spanish language skills are desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess a valid California Class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record. A class A or B license is desirable.

Advancement Criteria
A Maintenance Specialist I who meets the criteria to advance to Maintenance Specialist II must have served a minimum of 6 months satisfactory performance at their current wage step prior to reclassification.
