Job Description

SCOPE OF POSITION:



See Plymouth, under the direction of two boards - Plymouth County Development Council (PCDC) and Destination Plymouth(DP) - is a private, nonprofit marketing organization responsible for promoting the Town and County of Plymouth. It operates as a convention visitors bureau, manages three visitor centers, and is a destination marketing company. The Executive Director is responsible and accountable for a professional staff that manages the day-to-day operation and fiscal integrity of the organization.

See Plymouth is the official Regional Tourism Council (RTC) for Plymouth County in the state of MA. The state funds sixteen regional tourism councils. The MA Office of Travel & Tourism (MOTT) administrates the Tourism Trust Fund that is granted to See Plymouth under the PCDC Board. The funding from the MA Tourism Trust Fund grant must be applied for annually. See Plymouth operates the MA Visitor Center at Route 3, Exit 13 but receives no funding for this. ED must participate in monthly RTC meetings in person or by zoom.

Under the Destination Plymouth board, See Plymouth bids to run Town of Plymouth tourism every three years. Bid contract requires promotion of the Town of Plymouth as a tourism destination and operation of the Waterfront Visitor Information Center. The ED attends all Town of Plymouth Visitor Services Board Committee (VSB) meetings and reports on tourism in the Town of Plymouth.

See Plymouth headquarters is located at 4 North Street in the Town of Plymouth where there is a third visitor center. For both boards, under the name of See Plymouth, the Executive Director acts as spokesperson and represents See Plymouth before others.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB DUTIES:



Supporting individual tourism businesses and tourism providers by successfully implementing tourism marketing strategies to promote tourism development for the region. This includes placing advertising campaigns that include digital, broadcasting and print venues that includes traditional and internet-based marketing ideas. Also included are public relations, and sales promotion efforts done in-house.

Working proactively with local, regional, and state government to negotiate financial support through grants; continuously seeking new revenue sources for the financial stability of the organization; and continually working to increase the See Plymouth membership base from the Town of Plymouth as well as other tourism related towns in the County of Plymouth.

Actively networking with the Commonwealth, MOTT, the RTCs, the Town of Plymouth, See Plymouth members, as well as other individuals and organizations to improve and enhance regional and local tourism diversification, niche marketing, and regional branding.

Participating and/or leading strategy of professional group and committee meetings, conferences, trade shows, and tourism events.

Overseeing and enhancing the online presence of See Plymouth in social media, website, press releases, andblogs.

Directing and assisting the Finance Director in creating the departmental budget and financial reports. Preparing the annual budget and presenting it to the board for approval. Preparing and presenting written and oral reports regarding the activities and services of See Plymouth. Successfully overseeing preparation of the MOTT Audit as well as financial reviews for DP and PCDC.

Hiring, training and supervising staff for See Plymouth headquarters, and all three Visitor Information Centers.

Ensuring that See Plymouth fully complies with the requirements of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts pertaining to the operation of tourist promotion agencies and visitor bureaus.

Any other duties as assigned.

REPORTING DUTIES:



The Executive Director reports directly to the Destination Plymouth Executive Board of Directors and the Plymouth County Development Council E-Board of Directors, working closely with the Chairmen of both organizations. The ED will prepare agendas with guidance from both E-Boards before Full Board meetings, as well as work with Chairs in planning board meetings, work on committees, etc. The ED shall also prepare and submit quarterly reports, marketing plans, grant applications and other required documentation on deadline to the MA Office or Travel & Tourism (MOTT).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:



Must have proven knowledge and experience of the tourism industry and its significance to economic development.
Must have experience in understanding, analyzing, and reporting tourism data and research.
A bachelor's degree or higher in a tourism-related field such as communications, business administration, or hospitality. Comparable experience may substitute. MBA preferred.
Five years of increasingly responsible administrative experience, at least three of which have been in a supervisory capacity.
Must be able to work evening and weekends as deemed necessary; must have a car and a valid Massachusetts driver's license and travel as assigned.
Must possess excellent time management skills, a strong work ethic and a natural flair towards customer service and hospitality in general.
Able to develop and facilitate marketing strategies, including the annual marketing plan, to promote Plymouth County. Proven talent in developing and marketing project ideas is essential.
Must have solid financial expertise, relevant experience in fundraising, and ability to oversee and administer a complex budget, including writing grant proposals and knowledge of 1038 funding.
Must have demonstrated negotiating skills and be able to act as a forceful advocate in promoting both the region's tourism industry as a whole and the interests of individual entrepreneurs.
A highly detail-oriented and teamwork focused individual, who has the capability to multitask and who possesses an advanced degree of organizational, interpersonal, financial, and communicational skills.
Knowledge of board-led, not-for-profit governance and operation; policy development and/or government relations experience is an asset. Familiarity with tourism and hospitality.
Excellent oral and written communication skills should include reports, press releases and PowerPoint presentations.
Experience with and strong working knowledge of social media and website content.
Familiarity, experience, and working knowledge of Analytical data and other tourism software.
Strong skills in Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel
Working knowledge of accounting software such as Quickbooks

SUPERVISORY/MANAGERIAL EXPERIENCE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Responsible for supervision of all assigned staff. Responsibilities include interviewing, recommendation for hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing of work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Requires at least three years of managerial experience with direct reports, preferably 5+ years.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:



Work is performed in standard office environments. Client environments may vary. May be exposed to moderate noise levels. Worker is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment in excess of 8 hours daily. Travel to various worksites may be required, depending upon assignment.
