Position Summary

The Excavator Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment for the purpose of installing underground utilities to depths of greater than 20 feet.

Position Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Primary responsibilities include the following:

Perform daily functional and safety inspections of assigned equipment, and any light maintenance needed. Report equipment concerns to supervisor. Installation of various trench shoring systems. Identify the proper installation method for each project which may include sewer, storm drains, potable water and force mains. Excavation may include high water environments. Perform tasks using assigned equipment as directed by the Foreman and/or Superintendent. Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors. Perform all work safely and effectively while operating the excavator equipment. Monitor all steps of the operation to ensure standard quality and operating practices are being followed. Other tasks as assigned.

Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or equivalent preferred; and a minimum of two years' experience in trenchless installation, including boiler operation. License Requirement: A valid driver's license required with clean motor vehicle report. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to listen and comprehend instructions accurately; ability to communicate with other employees. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, including whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; ability to use a computer to view data. Reasoning Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

: In the performance of duties for this position, the employee is: regularly required to sit (while driving), talk, and hear without visual controls; frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, grip, or feel objects, tools or controls, repetitive motion, required to walk, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, stretch, push, pull, reach with hands and arms, climb ladders, steps and narrow passages, walk uneven surfaces and wear appropriate personal protective equipment; balance, and taste or smell; regularly lift, push, pull and move up to 75 pounds. Ability to use pneumatic, battery powered or electric tools. Must have ability to wear respirator and body harness while entering confined spaces. Vision abilities required by this job include: close, distance, peripheral, and color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Ability for extended concentration. Must be able to enter confined spaces and comply with safety policies. *

Work Environment:

In performing the duties for this job, the employee will generally work in outside weather conditions (at job sites with moving vehicles and mechanical operations). Will be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level is usually moderate. Travel by automobile and airplane required.
