Position Summary
The Excavator Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment in a sand and gravel environment. This position involves excavation, ditch-in operations, and dewatering activities to support aggregate production, site maintenance, and water management. The operator must demonstrate strong attention to safety, environmental compliance, and equipment care.
Key Responsibilities

• Operate excavators to dig, load, and move gravel, sand, and overburden materials.
• Excavate and maintain drainage ditches to manage surface and groundwater effectively.
• Perform dewatering tasks, including setting up and maintaining pumps, hoses, and sumps to control water levels in work areas.
• Inspect equipment daily and report any defects or maintenance needs.
• Maintain proper pit slopes, grades, and drainage for safety and efficiency.
• Follow site plans, production targets, and instructions from supervisors.
• Conduct pre-start checks and ensure all operations comply with company safety policies and environmental regulations.
• Assist with general maintenance, including road building, berm shaping, and stockpile management.
• Operating other equipment such as loaders, dozers and mining equipment is a plus.

Qualifications & Skills

• Minimum of 2-3 years of experience operating excavators in a gravel pit, construction, or mining environment.
• Knowledge of ditching techniques and dewatering systems.
• Ability to read and understand site drawings, grades, and elevations.
• Strong commitment to workplace safety and environmental best practices.
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic maintenance on equipment.

Working & Physical Requirements
The job will require operating large equipment which is typically air conditioned. There will be times when outside assignments may require periods of work in all weather conditions, heat, cold, wet, or dry. May have exposure to dust, sand, gravel, diesel exhaust, etc. Capable of performing repetitive tasks and sitting for extended periods in equipment.
