Job Description


The City of Valdez Parks & Recreation Department is hiring for 2 Event & Activity Staff to aid with programs and events.
This position is under direct supervision of a Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Staff IV, this position coordinates programs, oversees participants, facility operations, organized group activities and games, leads arts and crafts, and monitors adults, youth or family activities and special events.

This is a non-benefited, temporary position working between 15-30 hours per week to include, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Positions are open until filled with first review of applicants beginning September 1, 2023.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide customer service to program patrons.
  • Assists in coordinating and implementing general recreation programs at an assigned facility, center or event.
  • May perform cleaning and general maintenance.
  • Maintains order and discipline by enforcing rules, regulations and safety precautions.
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions and intervenes when necessary.
  • Acts as a team member maintaining a cooperative attitude with employees, supervisors and staff.
  • Performs specific duties as outlined per activity, program or event.
  • Attend department and facility staff meetings and in-service trainings, as required.
  • Maintains administrative records, to include, attendance, equipment, facility cleaning logs, program registration and program rosters.
  • Maintains facility security and performs custodial duties as necessary
  • Is the on-site team leader of Recreation Staff I, II and all volunteers.
  • Must render aid, call 911, stabilize injuries until assistance arrives
  • Enforces patron conduct protocols for immediate suspension or ejections for up to 24 hrs, as outlined in Rules of Conduct.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Knowledge, skills and other characteristics:
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills, with both staff and patrons.
  • Ability to work effectively with various age groups.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks.
  • Follows all required guidelines and tasks of necessary certifications.
Physical requirements and work environment:
  • Work environment is varied depending on facility, venue and program, indoor and outdoor year round.
Minimum qualifications: Recreation:
  • Minimum 16 years old or older.
  • Experience in volunteerism or participation in recreational activities desired.
  • Obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR Certification within the first month of work.
  • Possess a valid Alaska State Driver\'s license.
  • Obtain and maintain additional job specific training and certifications outlined per activity, program, facility or event.
