. The Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and timely cost estimates for
mass grading, storm drainage, water, and sanitary sewer installation
, as well as erosion control and paving. This role requires strong technical expertise, familiarity with
local municipalities' standards
, and the ability to work collaboratively with project managers and field superintendents to ensure successful project delivery from bid to completion.
Key Responsibilities
Review bid invitations, civil drawings, and project specifications to determine scope, site conditions, and materials required.
Perform detailed
quantity takeoffs
for earthwork, utilities, and site improvements using digital takeoff software.
Develop
comprehensive cost estimates
including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractor pricing, and production rates.
Analyze
subcontractor and supplier quotes
for accuracy, completeness, and competitiveness.
Prepare and submit
competitive bid proposals
and assist in pricing change orders and design revisions.
Coordinate with
Project Managers
and
Superintendents
to review constructability, production rates, and schedule impacts.
Attend
pre-bid meetings
and
site visits
to assess access, topography, and existing utility conditions.
Maintain and update a
cost database
of unit prices, productivity rates, and vendor information for future estimates.
Participate in
value engineering
discussions to propose cost-saving construction alternatives.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience accepted.
Experience:
Minimum
3-5 years
of estimating experience in
site development, grading, and underground utility installation
, preferably for
residential or commercial subdivision projects
.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in estimating and takeoff software such as
HCSS HeavyBid
,
Agtek
,
Trimble Business Center
,
Bluebeam
, or equivalent.
Working knowledge of
AutoCAD Civil 3D
and the ability to read and interpret civil construction plans.
Strong understanding of
earthwork balancing
,
pipe installation
, and
erosion control
methods.
Familiarity with
City of Raleigh
,
Wake County
, and
NCDOT
design and construction standards.
Soft Skills:
Excellent analytical and mathematical skills.
Strong communication and organizational abilities.
Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.
Preferred Attributes
Experience working with
GPS modeling and machine control data preparation

Knowledge of
local subcontractors, material suppliers, and current market pricing
in the Triangle region.
Field experience in
grading or utility construction

Ability to collaborate with engineers, owners, and municipal officials during the bid and preconstruction phase.
