Job Description

The Equipment Operator is responsible for grounds maintenance using heavy machinery on Anchorage School District facilities. The location of the work station is subject to contract language concerning shift location/bids. Maintenance employees work a 4/10 schedule with weekends and holidays off. The Anchorage School District offers paid leave and a very competitive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA and life insurance. This position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
Job Requirements
The following are required: * A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.

  • Minimum of four years of experience within the past six years in the field of a heavy equipment operator. Work experience must evidence ability to perform tasks assigned.
  • Must possess an Alaska class A commercial driver's license with the following endorsements: general knowledge, air brake, combination vehicle, and tank vehicle.
  • Must pass proficiency test at the employer's work location. The proficiency test for the prospective operator will consist of, but will not be limited to, the preparation necessary to transport a loader on a trailer pulled by an end dump truck, drive the road grader to a specified location, and perform assigned tasks.
  • The Anchorage School District requires that the selected applicant for this position be given a conditional offer of employment contingent upon successfully passing a post offer/pre-employment physical capacities assessment.
Essential Job Functions * Operates heavy equipment in a variety of work assignments including, but not limited to, snow removal, ice maintenance, sanding, landscaping, excavating, and backfilling.
  • Monitors equipment for failure and performs minor operator maintenance.
  • Routinely works at heights over 10 feet.
  • Ability to interpret and work from plans, prints, specifications, and established maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to write reports as required.
  • Ability to proficiently use appropriate computer applications for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Works within established safety procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others.
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
