The
City of Richmond Department of Public Works
is seeking highly a qualified candidate to fill the position of
Equipment Operator, Principal
in the
Traffic Engineering Pavement Markings Division
. The incumbent is responsible for the operation and maintenance of equipment and performing a variety of associated maintenance tasks. The Equipment Operator, Principal will have substantive knowledge of specialized equipment maintenance and repairs; conduct tests for the detection of faults; breaks; and leaks. The incumbent should have demonstrated leadership abilities and meet the abilities of the Equipment Operator, Senior position. The incumbent will assign and monitor work completions.
Duties include but are not limited to

Performing pavement marking installation and maintenance
Assisting with sign installation and maintenance as needed
Operating heavy specialized equipment such as a forklift, compressor, pick-up truck, and sign installer
Operating light equipment such as paint spray guns on back of a paint truck, paint eradicators, paint applicators, and specialized tools for sign and pavement marking installation
Maintaining equipment, machinery, or vehicles in good working order
Observing established protocols and procedures for safe operation and storage, performing routine maintenance, and reporting damaged or unsafe equipment to supervisor
Monitoring or assisting in maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment
Processing routine documents and forms, such as work orders, repair requests, reports, and work logs
Setting up safe work zones using proper traffic control devices
Consulting work orders, route lists, maps, charts and/or blueprints
Removing debris, litter, graffiti from signs, or pavement; loads material into trucks
Other related duties as assigned
City of Richmond Public Works employees who work in this class are considered essential personnel and will be required to work during declared emergencies and major weather events.
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
High School Diploma or GED
Two years of experience at the Equipment Operator, Senior level
Training in equipment used at this level of assignment
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with proper endorsements in accordance with Division of Motor Vehicle regulations
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of complex heavy equipment and vehicles and hydraulics.
Knowledge of safety rules regarding the operation of various equipment and tools. Basic math skills.
Usage of various tools and equipment.
Knowledge of general traffic safety practices.
Skill in generating, completing, and distributing reports and other forms.
Oral and written communication skills.
Customer service skills.
Ability to read a map.
Skill in preparing and restoring a work site.
Operating equipment in the Equipment Operator and Equipment Operator, Seniorclassifications, as well as operating equipment and vehicles mentioned above.
Ability to organize, problem solve, manage time effectively, and pay attention to detail when working in an environment with electrical, power, water, and gas lines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly finger and see; frequently talk and hear; and occasionally balance, stoop, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
