Performs intermediate technical work organizing and implementing public awareness programs for municipal environmental, water, sewer, and solid waste operations, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the limited supervision of the Environmental & Storm Service Manager.

Essential Functions

Develop, oversee, and deliver educational and public participation programs regarding environmental, water, sanitary and storm sewer, wellhead, stormwater and solid collections issues along with policies to schools, citizens, businesses, and employee groups. Assist in the development and implementation of environmental regulatory programs for Environmental Services and City storm water permit requirements. Assist with multi-departmental environmental efforts. Prepare grant applications and manage grant implementation. Assist in the development and management of budgets for Environmental Services. Coordinate and lead the activities of environmental advisory teams on Environmental Services programs and issues. Serve as resource person, develop plans, and implement programs for public relations associated with Environmental Services activities. Coordinate technical and clerical staff activities in the implementation of environmental programs. Collect data and report on departmental environmental program implementation. Develop and implement strategies for furthering environmental protection within the community and provide recommendations for policy and procedure actions. Prepare and deliver presentations, reports, and informational brochures to support Environmental Services programs. Meet with businesses and residents to raise awareness of Environmental Services' activities and obtain feedback. May act as City representative when asked to conduct public relations with the local media, other regional governmental agencies and services, businesses, residents, etc., for Environmental Services matters. Function as team leader for multi-departmental environmental efforts. Regular use of computers, software, and multimedia equipment to manage the activities of the program.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with coursework in environmental science, chemistry, biology, or related field. 1-3 years experience with environmental programs and campaigns.

Special Requirements:

Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone. Work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
