Job Description

The Responsibilities of the Environmental Education Program Manager:
Under limited supervision, manages the development, delivery and dissemination of the environmental education programs for the South Carolina Forestry Commission, including developing lesson plans for use by agency personnel, teachers and partner organizations across the state, correlating lesson plans to state academic standards. Serves as the Project Learning Tree Coordinator for the state of South Carolina, managing a statewide network of formal and informal educators to ensure delivery of forestry-centric educational programming and reporting of metrics of effectiveness. Provides management and leadership for the Wood Magic Forest Fair, directing all operational and curricular aspects of the off-site, multi-location events. Provides correlated curriculum instructional support for the SC Teachers' Tour.
Manages all activities associated with the environmental education programs for the SC Forestry Commission, developing lesson plans for grades 1-12 that promote understanding of and raise awareness of the value of forests and forestry, ensuring lesson plans comply with ever-changing appropriate state academic standards and agency goals, and provides detailed reporting of qualitative and quantitative metrics on the effectiveness of such programming. Takes the lead on providing educational/informational deliverables to teachers, students, parents, allied organizations, ad hoc projects, etc. Consults with the Information and Education Director on all activities.
Serves as the South Carolina Project Learning Tree (PLT) Coordinator. Trains and supports PLT facilitators, managing the scheduling of educator workshops, representing South Carolina at national meetings, working with the state PLT Steering Committee to resolve issues and improve the program.
Provides leadership for the Wood Magic Forest Fair by managing all aspects, including but not limited to scheduling, recruitment, logistics, and correlation of curriculum for the event. Ensures lesson plans are relevant works with the steering committee for continuous program improvement.
Provides administrative, logistical and instructional support to the SC Teachers Tour. Reviews programs and agenda, coordinates with Teachers Tour Steering Committee; assesses evaluations and makes recommendations for continuous improvement of the Tour; research and explore alternate ways to recruit participants.
Supervises other Environmental Education program employee(s). Ensures that the Employee Performance Management System (EPMS) is used as a continuous communication tool and planning stages and evaluations are completed within the agency timeframes.
Shares in the responsibility of staffing the Harbison State Forest (HSF) Center building; attends HSF staff meetings and assists visitors and other user groups. Performs other duties as required, including representing the SC Forestry Commission on environmental education committees.

  • A bachelor's degree and one year of relevant program experience.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • A criminal background check and drug test are required.
  • Position is in an office setting but does require to be outside much of the time.
  • Must be able to lift 25lbs, bend and squat.
  • Requires extensive seasonal overnight and out-of-town travel.
  • Normal work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm.
  • Knowledge of an agency's mission, programs and objectives, particularly its statutorily established educational outreach mandates. Knowledge of management principles and mastery of educational expectations and outcomes. Knowledge of an agency's organizational structure, the people who manage the work, and the processes applicable to government work.
  • Ability to interpret, apply and work within state government rules and regulations as well as correlate educational programming to state academic standards. Ability to manage work of employees and provide direction and guidance to networks of employees and agency partners. Ability to make presentations, record strategic metrics and prepare reports. Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Position is subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace Drug & Alcohol Testing. This position is designated as safety sensitive.
