Job Description

The Engineering Technician is responsible for assisting in the review, coordination, and processing of utility permit applications involving installations within or adjacent to railroad right-of-way. This position supports the Engineering and Public Projects team by ensuring that proposed utility work complies with railroad standards, safety requirements, and applicable regulatory guidelines. The Engineering Technician works collaboratively with internal departments, public agencies, consultants, and utility companies to safeguard railroad infrastructure and ensure that all permitted work is completed in a safe and compliant manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



Review utility permit applications, engineering drawings, and supporting documentation for compliance with railroad design criteria and standards. Coordinate with external applicants, utility owners, and public agencies to clarify technical requirements and resolve design issues. Prepare and issue review comments and technical correspondence in accordance with established policies and procedures. Maintain accurate permit tracking records and project documentation within company databases. Collaborate with engineering, real estate, operations, and construction personnel to facilitate effective project coordination. Participate in meetings and discussions with applicants and stakeholders to communicate requirements and expectations. Perform additional engineering support duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications:



One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience in civil engineering, utility coordination, railroad operations, or transportation infrastructure preferred. Proficiency in reading and interpreting civil engineering and utility plans; familiarity with CAD-based drawings (AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.), and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare professional correspondence and technical summaries. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent assignments. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Knowledge of railroad engineering principles, FRA standards, or public agency coordination processes is preferred.

Annual Salary range: $50,000 - $93,000
