Position Overview
The Magnet Systems Department at Fermilab is seeking an Engineering Technician I to support the High Luminosity LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project. This technician will execute hands-on mechanical and electro-mechanical assembly work on high-precision components used in particle accelerator systems. Work will be conducted under the supervision of engineers and scientists in a laboratory environment with strict attention to quality, safety, and documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Perform mechanical assembly and disassembly tasks using hand tools and fixtures.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, schematics, and assembly procedures.
Follow detailed written instructions and document work completed via electronic logs.
Conduct grinding, soldering, cutting, drilling, and adhesive bonding using approved tools and methods.
Work with epoxies, solvents, adhesives, and other chemical agents per safety guidelines.
Lift and maneuver components up to 40 lbs and assist with staging and installation tasks.
Maintain cleanliness and quality control standards during build operations.
Collaborate with engineering teams to identify and address technical issues during builds.
Basic Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of 2 years experience in mechanical or electro-mechanical assembly.
Ability to read and interpret engineering documentation and follow written procedures.
Experience with standard mechanical tools, calipers, torque wrenches, and digital documentation tools.
Proficiency with MS Word and Excel for status reporting and procedure completion.
Physically capable of standing for extended periods and handling repetitive tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous work in DOE, aerospace, defense, or high-tech manufacturing environments.
Familiarity with cleanroom or contamination-controlled assembly practices.
Experience with large component or magnet/coil system assembly is a plus.
Work Conditions
On-site at a national laboratory facility.
Occasional overtime may be required for project milestones.
Strict adherence to safety protocols and contamination control procedures.
