Job Description

The CITY of AMSTERDAM is currently seeking an Engineering Technician to support the Engineering Department under the supervision of the City Engineer.

This is a technical position responsible for taking part in field survey work, drafting and inspection of construction projects. The employee may perform field survey work including the leading of small project survey parties, and other engineering support tasks. The position regularly requires assisting in the design in highways, buildings, sanitary and storm sewers, water distribution mains, including landscaping projects. The employee reports directly to the City Engineer and/or a senior-level-engineering staff member. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

Inspect portions of construction projects.

Take part in field survey work including the leading of small project survey parties.

Make and check engineering computations

Prepare portions of written reports and keeps related records

Assist in the design in highways, buildings, sanitary and storm sewers, water distribution mains, including landscaping projects

Conduct complex field and laboratory tests of engineering materials

Use of various computer applications in the performance of your duties to include AUTODESK, AUTOCAD and ARCGIS

Assist the City Engineer with plumbing and heating permit administration, excavation permits and all other permits

Support the engineer's office for capital projects at the City's wastewater treatment plant and water filtration plant

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge and understanding of construction inspection techniques; good knowledge of engineering field and survey work; good working knowledge of mathematics and typical routine engineering problems; ability to prepare field records and reports; ability to represent the engineering office to outside contractors; ability to work outdoors; dependability; integrity; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

:

An Associates of Applied Science (AAS) degreefrom an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering Technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry or surveying; Or

A NICET Level II (or higher) certification AND

three years of experience as listed above in construction inspection, surveying, engineering CADD drafting, ARCGIS system development, construction materials testing or construction administration.

Experience with municipal engineering and construction methods is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

:

A valid NYS Driver's License is required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
