General Overview:
This position enables the District 62 Design Office to perform its duties and responsibilities in a timely and effective manner with quality control and coordination to ensure that the best possible cost effective solution is provided for the traveling public. The function of this position is to assist engineers in the performance of drafting, design, survey, and/or water resources work in the District 62 Design Office. Position handles plan development and technical details for projects in the Pavement Preservation Program, TSM program, Safety Program and other projects as determined by supervisor. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.
Knowledge/Training Required
This position requires advanced level knowledge and/or technical expertise in the use of various computer software such as computer aided drafting (CADD) and MS Office. In addition, knowledge of all departmental policies and procedures, EDSMs, AASHTO Road Design Guidelines, 3R Road Design Guidelines, PRR Minimum Design Guidelines, DOTD Minimum Design Guidelines, standard plans, standard specifications and design manuals (roadway, bridge and hydraulics) as they relate directly to the design of construction projects. May also provide on-the-job training or assistance to newer or lower level technicians. Also, incumbent must successfully complete in-house training courses before being eligible for promotion to this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
Prepares roadway construction plans utilizing CADD, MS Office and InRoads for technical design computations, reduce survey data and compute plan quantities such as earthwork, base course, asphaltic concrete, Portland cement concrete and striping. Use DOTD Intranet to track projects and stay on schedule. Ensure that plans meet all applicable specifications, design standards, departmental policies and engineering directives. Complete written design exception reports for projects as required. Analyze traffic data, roadway borings, pH and resistivity and traffic crash reports to select appropriate design roadway geometry and pavement structure.
Prepares preliminary and final cost estimates, conducts/attends pre-design meetings and attends pre-construction meetings on an as needed basis. Completes all required project documentation.
Schedule and attend field trips to obtain site information required for the development of construction plans. Coordinates with Survey Crew and instructs them on the required information to be gathered when surveying. Attends and coordinates meetings with various sections within LADOTD. Collaborates with other sections within the District and at Headquarters to ensure that the latest design requirements are utilized, to facilitate complex plan changes, to implement test sections, etc.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor, such as, but not limited to, emergency operations/disaster support activities.

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as a Job Appointment, Promotional or Probationary Appointment requiring 12-24 months on probation

Work Schedule: Work schedule varies, Monday - Friday
Compensation:

  • Engineering Technician 1 - Starting salary is $14.00/hourly with an additional $2.00 in premium pay for every hour worked
  • Engineering Technician 2 -Starting salary is $16.03/hourly with an additional $2.00 in premium pay for every hour worked
  • Engineering Technician 3 -Starting salary is $18.35/hourly with an additional $2.00 in premium pay for every hour worked
  • Engineering Technician 4 -Starting salary is $21.00/hourly with an additional $2.00 in premium pay for every hour worked
The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as to maintain the following licensing and operate the following equipment:
Valid driver's license
Operate a state owned vehicle, computer, surveying equipment, etc.
Perform duties in extreme weather conditions such as rain, cold, or heat
May be required to lift items up to 50 lbs
Submit to random drug testing as required
