Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
This Engineering Technician Supervisor position is located in Hutchinson, KS. The main purpose of this position is to assist the construction engineer in the management of the construction office by supervising the technical staff, serving as a project manager on construction projects; assigning personnel to projects; and ensuring that surveys, testing procedures, documentation and other inspection duties are properly carried out and completed.
NOTE:
The employee in this position must also maintain Certified Inspection certifications under the KDOT CIT Program as outlined in the Engineering Technician Progression Manual for the specific job path and any additional as outlined by the Senior Manager.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
The person in this position will provide effective leadership to their assigned work unit. This includes such things as leading by example, providing performance objectives, midyear performance feedback discussions, timely performance reviews, coaching and counseling, discipline, and providing employee development opportunities for employees under their supervision
Schedules, supervises and conducts performance reviews for the subordinate technical staff. Participates in hiring and promotional decisions for the District Materials' Staff. Responsible for the management of subordinate's use of overtime. Also approves use of leave by these subordinates.
Responsible for the Materials Quality Assurance Program. Prepares the work assignments of the subordinate technicians to comply with KDOT's Quality Assurance Program. This requires knowledge of the specification requirements and the sampling frequency requirements for all materials being used on all projects.
Responsible for the management of the District's Inspector Witness Program. Monitors the Certified Inspector lists to determine which inspectors working in the District require witness of their testing capabilities. These inspector groups include KDOT personnel, Consultant inspectors and employees of the contractors.
Responsible for the accomplishment of bituminous concrete and Portland Cement Concrete mixture designs. This requires working with the Contractors on approved materials, specified mixture combinations, verification of submitted designs and performance of original design mixes.
Responsible for the monitoring of aggregate production at all quarry sites within the District.
Identifies areas of need for training. Uses this information to organize and perform effective training programs for technician staff and Engineering Associate Is in the District.
Provides other related assistance to the District Materials Engineer as directed.
Due to the nature of the work, incumbent may be required to work additional hours when needed, including nights and weekends. Additional hours to be assigned by the supervisor depending upon the needs of the Agency

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Five years of experience in engineering technical support.
Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of KDOT construction contract documents including the specification manual, special provisions, construction manual and documentation manual.
(10) ACI Aggregate Lab, (10) ACI Aggregate Field Tester, (10) Soils Field, (10) Superpave.
Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements:
This position is subject to pre-employment physical capacity testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
