Position is located in the Asheville Division Design Construct Unit (DDC). Position will assist with preparation of preliminary highway design; final highway construction plans and estimates of quantities on the more complex projects. The position requires high level skills in the preparation of design plans and through an understanding of complex design techniques and procedures. Advanced computer (CADD) proficiency is needed in MicroStation, Geopak, and Open Roads Designer (ORD). Position will assist the Design Engineers during the process of plan development including processing raw data, creating DTM files, creating horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, summaries of quantities, pavement marking plans, right of way plans, signing plans, traffic management plans, and erosion control plans. Designs conceptual maps for the Division staff to use at public hearings and as a support document for funding requests. Reviews and checks plans developed by NCDOT design technicians, private engineering firms, and other NCDOT units. Resolves minor to moderate design issues by determining possible solutions and consulting with the DDC Engineer and Assistant DDC Engineer with little to no supervision. Position will require surveying experience including taking notes, collecting field data and preparing routine reports. Provides support to the survey party in the field during preliminary location surveys, deed research and construction stakeout. This senior technician is also instrumental in the training of lower-level technicians in both design and survey techniques. Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC13 - $48,222.00 - $84,388.00
Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in design, applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
  • Computer experience in Design Software including Geopak, Microstation, and Corridor Modeling.
  • Knowledge of mathematical functions (such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry).
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications and procedures.
  • Experience in surveying including taking notes, collecting field data and preparing routine reports.
Additional Expectations:
Working knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering and construction methods materials and equipment. Advanced skills in the operation of computer terminals, drafting instruments, and CADD workstations. Ability to understand and explain roadway plan preparation, provisions, specifications and contracts; Train other employees and plan, coordinate and supervise their work; and communicate effectively both orally and written. Operate State vehicle. Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
