Duties
  • Operates gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment.
  • Excavates, backfills, and levels earth to rough specifications.
  • Clears sloped banks along waterways, roadways, floodways, and levees.
  • Operates a heavy equipment transport truck and lowboy trailer combination for the purpose of transporting heavy construction equipment and materials to and from job sites.
  • Operates vehicles that may be equipped with attachments such as plows, blades, etc.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure safe and serviceable condition.
  • Some locations may require crane operations.
Requirements

Conditions of Employment
  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or Naturalized U.S. Citizen.

  • You may be required to serve a one year probationary period.
  • You must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL), without impeding restrictions, and issued by a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory.
  • You must obtain and maintain, within one year of the date of appointment, a hazardous material (HAZ-MAT) endorsement on your Commercial Driver License (CDL), that is issued by a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory.
  • You must successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination.
  • You must pass a pre-employment drug test and pass periodic drug testing thereafter. A positive result will prevent employment or subject the incumbent to disciplinary action, up to removal from the position.
  • You must be able to lift and carry up to 44 pounds unassisted, and over 44 pounds with assistance.
  • You must be able to sustain periods of substantial walking, bending, stooping, standing, crouching, stretching, and reaching.
  • You may be subject to unfavorable conditions that include high and low temperature extremes, and excessive winds.
  • You must maintain Direct Deposit of your federal pay.
  • You will be exposed to loud noise, vibration, dirt, gaseous fumes, cleaning solvents, oil, grease, and machines with dangerous moving parts.
  • You may be required to work overtime.

  • You must be able to work on high structures up to 75 feet and in confined spaces.

Minimum Qualification Requirement - To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required, however your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator (Open Until Filled) without more than normal supervision.

Examples of such experience include: operating gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction (e.g. crawler tractor, graders, front-end loader, backhoe, trench digger, bulldozer, etc.); operating gasoline or diesel-powered motor vehicles (e.g. dump truck, water truck, tractor/trailer) with a gross vehicle weight of over 32,000 pounds; operating a heavy equipment transport truck and lowboy trailer combination; operating different sets of controls and attachments on heavy equipment using hand, foot, and eye coordination; determining the nature of soil and features of the terrain in order to safely grade surfaces to rough or fine specification; using basic tools such as wrenches, sockets, pliers, and/or screwdrivers to perform maintenance tasks on vehicles and equipment; applying knowledge of vehicle overhead and side clearances, turning radius, and breaking distance to adhere to state laws and agency traffic safety rules; loading, arranging, and securing cargo onto trailers.

Physical Effort
Representative duties entail the following functional requirements: unassisted heavy lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 44 pounds; lifting and carrying of items weighing over 44 pounds with the assistance of others or by using equipment such as carts, hand trucks, and dollies; recurring walking, standing, stooping, bending, and kneeling to work in cramped or hard-to-reach places; using legs and arms to climb ladders, scaffolds, and large equipment; reaching above shoulders; engaging in rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously to operate multiple vehicle controls; using near and far vision (correctable) and depth perception to read instructions, monitor gauges, and operate mobile equipment; hearing (aid permitted) to monitor equipment operation and voice communication; and adjusting to considerable strain caused by constant vibration of equipment and continual jerking and jolting from operating mobile equipment over rough surfaces.

Working Conditions
Representative duties entail the following environmental factors: working indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions and in geographically remote areas alone or as part of a work crew; exposure to drafts, changing temperatures, dirt, dust, grease, solvents, chemical fumes, noise, heights, slippery and uneven surfaces, and open waterways; constant noise from equipment; and subject to abrasions, cuts, bruises, strains, broken bones, insect bites, and other injuries. Follows established safety procedures and practices to avoid injury and possible hazards in the work area. Uses personal protective clothing, equipment, and safety gear (e.g. life vest, safety shoes, goggles, face shields, hearing protection, gloves, etc.).
