Position Information
TxDOT's San Antonio District is looking to hire a highly motivated graduate engineer based in San Antonio, TX that is interested in being part of the team that oversees bridge design, inspection and maintenance. In the SAT District - Bridge Section, you will be involved with in-house bridge design, plan preparation as well as 3D bridge modeling. This individual will perform bridge and structural engineering work, using current industry and TxDOT specifications.
NOTE: All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment.
This program will consist of a rotation within the Bridge Section (Design, Inspection, and Maintenance) which will provide you with experience for your PE license. If you are looking to build a career, you have come to the right place!
This position is for an Engineering Assistant II or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description
Performs engineering work. Work involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Work requires contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:

Engineering Assistant II
----------------------------
Assists during emergencies and inclement weather
Performs engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work.
Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, evaluation and analysis activities.
Performs research and problem solving of engineering-related problems.
Reviews engineering work for calculation errors and compliance with applicable federal and state laws and industry standards and guidelines.
Uses automated roadway/structural/hydraulic design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Engineering Assistant III

In addition to the duties listed above
Trains less experienced engineering assistants, specialists and technicians.
Creates detailed PS&E.
Performs advanced and specialized engineering design work.
Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants.
Reviews/designs and details bridge and structural elements.
Minimum Qualifications

Education
: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Acceptable Substitutions:
Master's degree in engineering or a Master of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
Doctoral degree in engineering or a doctor of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) may substitute for a Bachelor's degree
Experience
:
Engineering Assistant II
: 1 year of engineering related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent) and you must have your Texas Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT)
Engineering Assistant III
: 2 years of engineering related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent) and you must have passed your Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Texas Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT)
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures
Competencies:
Transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals
Transportation design engineering principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory
Computer-aided drafting and design systems
Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
Research and analysis methodologies
Application of engineering fundamentals

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions

Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry fliles/small tools
