The position requires troubleshooting faults with the advanced process control systems. The problems can found during routine monitoring of the systems or reported by operators, unit supervisors, or other users. The position identifies opportunities for advanced control to increase refinery profitability. This requires combining knowledge of advanced process control, process unit operation and the specific operational and economic goals of the refinery. The project must be approved by multiple audiences, including; DCS / SIS / APC Supervisor, Technical Manager, Central Operators, Unit Supervisor ,Area Superintendent and Planning and Logistics. Sometimes an APC opportunity can be identified by this same audience, but must be reviewed for feasibility and fully developed. Small projects can be designed, configured, commissioned and documented by the jobholder or tasks can be delegated to other group members with appropriate leadership and review. Larger projects can require working with CAA, writing a bid specification, selecting a contractor, and managing, coordinating, and reviewing the contractor's execution of the project.

This is accomplished by attending trade shows, user's meetings and training classes; reading industry magazines and books, web sites and sales literature; and discussions with industry contacts, salespeople, CAA and TOTAL employees from other locations.
