GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is an agency committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. We now seek a full-time Bridge Operations Engineer II located in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Perform engineering related to the operation of existing highway structures and design new highway structures that enhance public safety and improve the state\'s transportation system.

Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the history of the Old West. The city offers nearby mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Wyoming is one of only nine states with no state income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • With some direction and training from the supervisor and more experienced engineers, produces bridge load ratings to determine the theoretical load-carrying capacity of structures
  • Utilizes various computer applications to produce organized and legible engineering design calculations
  • Corresponds and tracks load rating activities
  • Reviews load ratings for clarity, organization, and completeness
  • Reviews the load capacity of the structures on routes to be taken by permitted overloads throughout the state
  • Utilizes proper engineering theory and knowledge of computer development applications to assist in developing, testing, and maintaining the BRASS suite of programs and other engineering software used in the design, review, and load rating of bridges and structural components
  • Coordinates with software programming consultant to resolve reported errors or bugs
  • Evaluates software for other bridge applications
  • With direction, responsible for the design and design check of steel and concrete bridges, overhead sign structures, concrete box culverts, retaining walls, and other highway-related structures, ensuring proper engineering theory and design principles, dimensional accuracy, and public safety in accordance with AASHTO specifications
  • Reviews fabricators\' designs and associated shop drawings
  • Checks structural details for conformance with the design and contract documents, proper detailing procedures, accuracy, office standards, and completeness
  • Calculates estimated material quantities and construction costs.
  • Attends and participates in the engineering forums
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge and competence in the principles, application, and interpretation of structural engineering design and theory to ensure uniformity and compliance with AASHTO design and load rating specifications, Program policies, and Department standards
  • Knowledge of engineering fundamentals relating to highway geometrics, hydraulic design, and geotechnical engineering as they relate to Department practice
  • Knowledge of drafting principles, practices, standards, and office policies that relate to structural detailing
  • Skill in the use of computer applications for structural design and office automation
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems to produce complete, legible, and organized designs
  • Ability to understand structural computations and complex algorithms used in mathematical computer models and recognize the theory as the basis of their use
  • Ability to communicate effectively through both verbal and written means to relate specific concepts, ideas, and instructions to engineers and technicians
  • Ability to work well with all members of the Bridge Program and other department programs
  • Ability to give attention to detail
  • Ability to draw on knowledge of engineering theory in designs, as well as to verify outputs from design software
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor\'s Degree (in Engineering)

Experience:

0-3 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering) with acquired knowledge at the level of Engineer I.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Engineer in Training (EIT) License or Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) Required.
