Performs intermediate technical work providing basic level emergency medical care, maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the EMS Lieutenant.

Examples of Duties

Provides emergency and non-emergency care to residents and visitors of the County; operates equipment and administers first aid; transports victims to emergency care facility; documents findings. Responds to emergency calls which might require advanced life support. Provide emergency medical care in accordance with established guidelines and written and verbal instructions from physicians. Determines extent of illness or injury and establishes priorities for required care. Transmits vital patient information and telemetry data to receiving medical care Facility. Observes patient in route and administers additional care as needed.



Completes and files documentation on calls. Prepares reports and other types of correspondences and maintains files and records.

Participates in continuing education activities and maintaining certification hours

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



General knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment and automobile extraction and transportation. General knowledge of the reading of electrocardiograms. General knowledge of the principles of anatomy, physiology, and chemistry in relation to the respiratory and circulatory systems. General knowledge of preparing reports and other types of correspondence. General knowledge of the use of standard office equipment and associated software. General knowledge of and the use of the equipment required for the position. General knowledge of the street system and geography of the County. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written form. Ability to establish and maintain and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the General public.


Physical Activities, Visual Acuity, and Working Conditions for this Position.



Climbing - Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion

Balancing - Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium

Stooping - Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles

Kneeling - Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees

Crouching - Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine

Crawling - Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet

Reaching - Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction

Standing - Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time

Walking - Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another

Pushing - Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward

Pulling - Using upper extremities to exert force to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion

Lifting - Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles

Fingering - Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling

Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes

Physical Requirements of This Position

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

License or Certification Requirements:





Possession of NC EMT Basic certification upon hire. Obtain NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800, and 704 certifications within six months of hire. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.

Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance

For Full Time employees in a regular position, insurance is available and effective the first day of the following month after having worked for an entire month. The County currently pays 100% of the cost for regular employees working at least 30 hours per week. Dependent coverage is also available.

Local Government Retirement System

All employees in regular full or part time position are required to contribute to the retirement system. Contributions are taken on a pre-tax basis. The current contribution amount is 6%.

Supplemental Retirement Plans

NC 401(k)- Employees have the option of making contributions on a pre or post tax basis to a 401(k) and on a pre tax basis to a a 457(b) plan. Contributions will be matched by the county, up to 1% or their annual base salary.

Other Insurance

Insurance such as life, short term disability, and cancer care are available to regular employees and can be paid through payroll deduction.
