Job Description


SUMMARY

Hennepin Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), a division of Hennepin County Medical Center, has four openings for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) to be hired in August of 2023.

Hennepin EMS is an Urban/Suburban 9-1-1 Emergency Medical Services agency that handles approximately 75,000 calls for service each year from the citizens and visitors of Hennepin County, Minnesota. We are based at Hennepin County Medical Center in Downtown Minneapolis and serve 14 municipalities within Hennepin County, covering 266 square miles and a population of over 700,000. Hennepin EMS deploys ambulances throughout the communities we serve, utilizing an integrated Computer Aided Dispatch that incorporates Automatic Vehicle Location and Global Positioning Satellites to ensure the closest available ambulance is sent to all emergencies.

Our goal is to deliver quality service to our customers with a courteous and immediate response while modeling the highest standard for excellence in public safety.

Schedule will be day/eve/night including rotating weekends and holidays based on department needs. This position is benefit-eligible, including PERA and P&F Pension, and represented by the HCAPE union.

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) are responsible for responding to requests for emergency and non-emergency medical services and for providing Basic Life Support to sick and injured persons at emergency and non-emergency scenes and during transport to a health care facility. May also assist paramedics in providing advanced level care within their scope of practice and training as directed.

EMTs will be given credit for previous EMT experience when calculating starting hourly pay rate. Each step below indicates the step for years of experience (max 4 years experience = step 4).

Starting - $22.00
Step 1 - $24.00
Step 2 - $25.00
Step 3 - $27.00
Step 4 - $28.00

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Respond to all requests for non-emergency, scheduled medical transport, and emergencies as directed
  • Assess nature and extent of illness or injury and determine appropriate emergency medical procedures
  • Administer basic life support techniques using the written patient care protocol and accepted standards of patient care
  • Perform extrication and rescue of victims
  • Acts as a team leader when dealing with emergency responses including the direction of First Responders to facilitate patient care and transport
  • Function effectively in assigned role under the Incident Response Plan
  • Complete thorough documentation of all emergency and non-emergency calls for service and patient contacts as directed
  • Safely operate emergency vehicle to transport sick and injured persons to and from a health care facility
  • Operate emergency medical equipment and communications equipment
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain emergency vehicle, supplies, and assigned equipment
  • Assist in keeping ambulance facilities clean and orderly
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports according to department standards
  • Attends all mandatory continuing education and required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards
  • Follows the hospital and department exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment with an emphasis on customer service
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team to facilitate the department\xe2\x80\x99s/unit\xe2\x80\x99s ability to meet its goals and objectives
  • Performs other duties as assigned after appropriate training
  • Demonstrates and lives the mission, vision, and values of the Hennepin Healthcare organization
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of an approved training program for EMT
  • Certification by the State of Minnesota as an EMT
Must have a valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license or state equivalent and must have a satisfactory driving record including no more than two moving violations in the past three years of licensure

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Six (6) months of experience as an emergency medical technician
OR
  • Successful completion of EMT clinical rotations with Hennepin EMS accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the school\xe2\x80\x99s Program Director
