Description of Work

The Traffic Survey Group of the Transportation Planning Division is a specialized traffic data collection and analysis group that manages a Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) comprised of a Continuous, Coverage, and Project Count Program for meeting the general traffic data requirements of NCDOT. Traffic monitoring data is used to support, but not limited to, the following: systems planning for urban and rural planning studies, validation of travel demand models, analysis for air quality conformity, project prioritization, traffic forecasting, pavement monitoring, safety analysis, commercial motor vehicle enforcement, research, and is widely used by other state agencies, local governments, and the public for other activities. The Traffic Survey Group is responsible for managing all activities related to developing, planning, processing, analyzing, and reporting required to manage the TMS. Activities associated with meeting this responsibility include designing, managing, planning, collecting, analyzing, and publishing traffic monitoring data.

The primary responsibilities of the Electronics Maintenance Technician II are managing equipment and resources of the electronics shop. The electronics shop supports portable and continuous count operations for the collection of traffic monitoring data. This position is responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting repair and testing of traffic counters, telecommunication, and related equipment in a shop or outdoor environment. Develops and maintains standardized troubleshooting and repair procedures. Coordinates with equipment unit for service of specialized vehicles issues and receives equipment from field operation staff. Responsible for receiving of supplies and equipment, maintaining shop parts, managing equipment inventories, and tracking of work orders. Responsible for ordering telecommunication services, devises, and tracking their assignment to staff and monitoring sites. Responsible for coordination of building maintenance and services. Request quotes, coordinates purchase request, receives goods and services, and maintains documentation of all shop related purchases with equipment unit for. Will be required to train newer technicians on equipment repair and maintenance. Performs other related duties as assigned

The Electronics Maintenance Technician II should have ability to travel, attend meetings, and work with field staff when needed. Ability to travel to monitor contractor activities. Ability to work at the roadside in a wide range of environmental conditions where heavy traffic flows occur. Operate an aerial device for installation and maintenance of various equipment. Must be able to lift and carry 80 pounds and use variety of hand and power tools. Provide site maintenance including cutting, clearing, and trimming of trees and bushes. Framing, digging, trenching, and installing concrete by hand will be required for installing new and existing concrete site pads. Ability to travel anywhere in the State and may require overnight travel, extended periods of time, and unusual work hours. Ability to operate a vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of electronic principles and practices applied in the installation, alteration, repair, and maintenance of non-standard electrical and electronic transportation data collection systems.
  • Experience and/or training in using computer applications and operations, such as email and MS Office software.
  • Skill in the detection, diagnosis and repair of electro-mechanical and electronic equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, coordinate, and conduct activities and convey findings in both oral and written form.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate hydraulic systems and accessories and operate an aerial device for installation and maintenance of solar panels and remote sensing devices.
Additional Expectations:
  • Employee must be able to lift up to 80 pounds, shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 50 feet in height without accommodations. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. The employee shall have the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic monitoring equipment. Employee will be expected to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and excessive heat conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. Safety toe shoes will be needed.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate\'s degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
