The primary purpose of Electrical Bureau is to perform on-site inspections of installations in New Mexico. Electrical Bureau ensures that Electrical installations in residential, commercial and public buildings conform to the current adopted Electrical codes and standards and the provisions of the Construction Industries Licensing Act. Through enforcement, the Electrical Bureau protects lives, health, safety, and properties of the citizens of New Mexico.

Why does the job exist?



The primary purpose of the Electrical Inspector is to promote the general welfare of the people of New Mexico by providing protection of life and property by independently conducting accurate and timely on-site inspections of electrical construction projects throughout New Mexico to ensure code compliant electrical construction of residential, commercial and public buildings. The Electrical Inspector will ensure that electrical construction projects conform to adopted electrical construction codes to promote the general welfare of the people of New Mexico by providing that electrical construction is completed within the requirements of the Construction Industries Licensing Act, its regulations and electrical construction code to include life safety and property protection.



This position is primarily to provide inspection service to primarily in Rio Arriba, Taos, Parts of Mora, Santa Fe and Sandoval Counties.

How does it get done?



Organization of daily schedules for maximum efficiency and minimum travel, researching and familiarization of current codes as they apply to conducting field inspections to protect life and property of New Mexico residents. Communicating daily with Inspectors, contractors, homeowners, and engineers as well as fellow inspectors from other CID Bureaus as necessary to ensure properly permitted, licensed and code compliant construction. Also providing assistance in other inspection areas when determined necessary as well as any other duties as directed by the incumbent's direct supervisor.

Minimum Qualification



If not already certified in a specialty as set out below, each Inspector must pass the examination of a national certifying organization recognized by the Construction Inspection Division within one (1) year of employment; and each Inspector must then remain certified by such certifying organization in at least one (1) of the following specialties:

Electrical Trades:

three (3) years of journeyman and/or electrical foreman experience; OR two (2) years of experience as a Construction Inspector. Applicants for a mechanical or electrical inspector position may substitute technical, university, or college training in a mechanical or electrical field for up to two (2) years of the three (3) years journeyman or foreman level experience. The equivalency shall be calculated such that one (1) year of technical, university or college training shall equal one half (1/2) a year of journeyman or foreman level experience. Further, in conjunction with the technical, university or college training, the applicant must demonstrate at least one (1) year of related field experience in their trade as a journeyman.

Employment Requirements



Must be able to pass a preemployment background check and maintain a valid driver's license.

Working Conditions



Incumbent will move about construction job sites in all types of weather and conditions. Climbing ladders, negotiating ditches and trenches and avoiding hazards typically related to construction sites. The incumbent must lift up to 50 pounds. Work is performed using a personal computer for extended periods. This position may work some weekends, holidays and occasional overnight travel may be required.
