Job Description

Education and Outreach Specialists are responsible for the development, delivery, administration, and evaluation of educational programs. The audience The Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) at the University of Virginia seeks an Education and Outreach Specialist for the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) Office. PALS is a partnership between the University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development (EHD), the Virginia Department of Education, and school divisions across the Commonwealth of Virginia. PALS-PreK, PALS-K, and PALS 1-3 make up the suite of assessments. Teachers in grades K-3 use PALS assessments to screen for early reading difficulties and the Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI) provides matching funds to divisions to provide early intervention to students who score below a benchmark. The incumbent will work collaboratively with a team on the PALS Hotline, website, professional learning opportunities, and research and development in support of teachers and administrators across Virginia. The ideal candidate has knowledge of scientifically based reading assessment and instruction, experience working collaboratively on large teams, and providing professional development and outreach services to teachers, schools, and school divisions. We are seeking a candidate who is Spanish speaking (listening, speaking, writing). The ideal candidate has a connection to the mission of improving early literacy assessment and instruction, especially for those in historically underrepresented and underserved communities. The Education and Outreach Specialist will:
  • With the team, support a diverse group of PALS users, including teachers, reading specialists, and administrators, through the PALS Hotline (phone, email, and chat)
  • Collaborate with senior team members to proactively identify, define, and prioritize problems faced by website users, internal colleagues, and project partners and suggest thoughtful, actionable solutions reflecting a thorough situational understanding
  • Build a complete working knowledge of the User Interface and Administration aspects of the PALS website and, with the team, test features and the management of online users and assessments on the PALS website
  • Assist senior team members in creating professional development materials and webinars
  • Assist in coordinating distribution of assessment materials to support teachers
  • Assist teachers, schools, and school divisions to gather, utilize, and analyze multiple data from assessment tools and assist leaders and teachers to use this information to improve instruction
  • Coordinate multiple simultaneous tasks of varying complexity, with demonstrated accountability, and excellent attention to detail while implementing flexible problem-solving skills
  • Assist in tasks related to ongoing research and development activities
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Position will be funded fully through the PALS-PreK and PALS K-3 grants through the VDOE.
  • Content knowledge of science-based reading acquisition and evidence-based practices
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Education, Psychology, Educational Technology, or a related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in an early childhood (PreK or K-3) environment
  • A Master's degree will be considered in lieu of experience
  • A candidate who is Spanish speaking (listening, speaking, writing).
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to interact effectively with a diverse team of internal and external constituencies
  • An understanding of customer support and creating efficient trouble-shooting processes and procedures
  • Demonstrated expertise, experience, and commitment to diversity, equity, and access
  • Experience with coaching, consulting, technical assistance, and/or training adult educators and leaders in individual and group settings
  • Excellent executive function skills: organization, time management, shifting focus (multitasking; alternating focus on details and ‘the big picture’ as needed)
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Strong desire to learn new skills and abilities and to continuously improve practices.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with a team in a deadline-driven environment
Proficiency in use of technology:
  • Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Videoconferencing, teaching, or webinar tools (e.g., Zoom, Canvas)
  • Virtual platforms or storage (e.g., Google Docs, Box)
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to provide on-location customer support. Application Instructions Complete an application online and include:
