Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA) is recruiting talented professionals who want to contribute and make a difference in our southeast Michigan community!! SEMCA is a Michigan Works! Agency providing workforce development programs to residents in Wayne and Monroe counties, excluding the city of Detroit. Annual Wage Range: $75,000 - $85,000

Job Summary

The Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License Restoration Attorney is responsible for the legal representation of program applicants in court hearings, interactions with the Michigan Secretary of State and related projects, per policy outlined by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and subsequent agreements between SEMCA and the County of Wayne and as assigned by the Expungement Project Attorney. This position will provide legal services and assist SEMCA staff to accomplish program goals and services primarily assisting in the restoration of driver\xe2\x80\x99s license privileges, within program guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fully understand all policy and legal requirements of new SEMCA Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License Restoration Program
  • Work closely with Expungement Project Attorney to ensure policy is being followed and to track expenditures in cooperation with Fiscal and MIS Department staff
  • Support efforts to promote public awareness of services
  • Assist Expungement Attorney with various duties including but not limited to:
  • Assistance with all legal issues related to the restoring of driving privileges for program applicants, including preparing and appearing with applicants at court hearings
  • Perform all legal filings required to obtain a court date for applicants including the summary and analyzing of documents necessary for eligibility
  • Assist, as needed, with representing Clean Slate expungement participants in court hearings when Clean Slate Expungement Attorney is not available
  • Maintain membership in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan
  • Ensure maintenance of case management and client tracking processes for program applicants, working directly with clients and keeping them informed
  • Have a working understanding of the restoration and expungement process.
  • Stay informed on updates to state statutes governing driver\xe2\x80\x99s license attainment and restoration
  • Build relationships with courts, judges, Secretary of State, and staff to develop a process to help aid the driver\xe2\x80\x99s license restoration process
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and seminars as requested
  • Advise Expungement Attorney, Director and appropriate SEMCA Officers if any legal issues require action above and beyond that listed above, and complete legal process for any of those issues
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications

All SEMCA team members are expected to be technically competent and committed to continuous development of their skills. The following skills, knowledge and education or certifications are specifically required for this position:
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree
  • Minimum one (1) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience working as a licensed attorney
  • Current member of the Michigan State Bar in good standing
  • Commitment to client-centered advocacy
  • Experience working with criminal defendants and an understanding of how to read driving records
  • Minimum two (2) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a supervisory position preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience working in the legal profession preferred
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skill with ability to communicate accurately and clearly both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and handle information in a professional and confidential manner
  • Valid Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software programs
Physical Demands

Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials on an LCD screen and smartphone, hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person and over the telephone.
