The Driver's Education Trainer supports Western Nebraska Community College's driver education program by delivering safe, effective, and professionally structured driving instruction for new drivers. This position teaches classroom theory, monitors online coursework, and provides behind-the-wheel training in accordance with state laws and curriculum standards. The Trainer evaluates student progress, reinforces safe driving habits, and maintains accurate instructional records.
Each course includes roughly 20 hours of classroom instruction and 50-70 hours of behind-the-wheel training, delivered in flexible formats ranging from morning sessions to evening blocks depending on enrollment and program needs. You can expect a steady but manageable schedule, with one class planned for June and another for July, followed by the possibility of one class each in the fall and spring semesters.

Prepare, plan, and deliver lessons from the college-provided driver education curriculum.
Teach a combination of in-person classroom theory, monitor online student course completion, and conduct behind-the-wheel driving instruction.
Administer student assessments, including final written examinations and practical driving tests.
Coach students on safe driving practices, traffic laws, decision-making skills, and defensive driving principles.
Provide timely, constructive feedback to help students develop confidence and improve specific skill areas.
Safely intervene and assume control of the vehicle during emergency or unsafe situations.
Support distressed or anxious students and maintain a calm, reassuring instructional environment.
Document student performance, progress, and completion in accordance with program requirements.
Report any accidents, incidents, or vehicle concerns to the college immediately and follow established procedures.
Maintain accurate attendance, training hours, and performance documentation for each student and submit records promptly.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required and Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Additional coursework or training in education, safety instruction, or driver training preferred.
Experience:
Experience teaching, training, or coaching individuals in a structured or skill-based setting preferred.
Experience positively interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds and ages preferred.
Experience using judgment in safety-sensitive situations preferred.
Experience working independently, managing time effectively, and maintaining detailed documentation preferred.
License or Certificate:
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Valid operator's license held in state of residence for at least two consecutive years required.
Clean driving record required, including:
+ No violations in the past five years for which five or more points might be assessed.
+ No suspensions or revocations within the past five years.
+ No convictions for DWI or related alcohol/drug offenses involving motor vehicle use (DMV Title 247). Ability to pass and maintain the required driving instructor certification course (36 hours of classroom/online instruction and 24 hours behind-the-wheel instruction).
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record that does not exclude the driver from coverage under WNCC's vehicle insurance required.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Frequent verbal communication, including public speaking and instruction.
Regular interactions with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Ability to sit for extended periods while driving or observing student drivers.
Occasional light physical activity, such as entering/exiting vehicles, adjusting mirrors or controls, or carrying instructional materials (up to approximately 20 pounds).
Work performed indoors for classroom instruction and outdoors during behind-the-wheel training, with exposure to variable weather conditions.
Use of electronic tools such as email, learning management systems, and digital recordkeeping.
Requires availability for evening, weekend, and summer work as assigned.
