Job Summary:


The Driver/Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) is tasked with delivering safe and dependable transportation services for clients at the substance abuse treatment center. This position involves transporting clients to and from the facility for admissions, appointments, and various activities, while also ensuring the maintenance and safety of the vehicle. The Driver/BHT aids in daily activities, monitors client safety, facilitates group activities, provides transportation, and offers emotional support in a compassionate, client-focused environment. Under the guidance of operational staff, the Driver/BHT guarantees compliance with treatment protocols and contributes to the establishment of a structured, therapeutic environment that promotes healing and recovery. The Driver/BHT is instrumental in supporting clients' treatment journeys by upholding a professional, compassionate, and client-centered approach.

Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 10AM - 6:30PM



Key Responsibilities:



Client Transportation

Transport clients safely to and from the treatment center, medical appointments, and other designated locations as directed by the center. Ensure clients are comfortable and informed about travel schedules, providing assistance as needed. Foster a supportive and respectful environment, maintaining professionalism and confidentiality during all interactions.

Safety and Compliance

Adhere to all traffic laws, safety guidelines, and facility protocols to ensure the safety of clients and other road users. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles, ensuring all safety equipment is functioning and that vehicles are clean and well-maintained. Document and report any incidents, accidents, or safety concerns to the BHT Supervisor, Director of Operations or designated supervisor immediately.

Vehicle Maintenance and Inspection

Perform routine checks on vehicles, including fuel levels, tire pressure, oil, and other essential functions, to ensure vehicles are ready for operation. Schedule and coordinate regular maintenance and repair services, ensuring vehicles remain in optimal working condition. Maintain accurate records of vehicle inspections, maintenance activities, and mileage logs.

Client Assistance and Support

Provide clients with any necessary support during transport, such as helping with mobility, assisting with seatbelts, and providing clear communication on trip details. Respond calmly and professionally in emergency situations, following protocols to ensure client safety and well-being. Engage with clients in a respectful and empathetic manner, understanding the challenges they may be facing during their recovery journey. Act as a Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) during non-transportation or unscheduled transportation times at the facility.

Scheduling and Coordination

Coordinate transport schedules with clinical and administrative staff to ensure timely pickups and drop-offs for appointments, admissions, and discharges. Maintain communication with the facility regarding trip status, delays, or changes to scheduled transportation. Assist with planning transportation logistics for group outings, events, or other client activities as required.

Documentation and Record-Keeping

Complete accurate daily logs, documenting trips, mileage, client attendance, and any pertinent observations. Maintain compliance with HIPAA and confidentiality policies, ensuring all client information is handled discreetly. Provide reports on transportation activities as needed for auditing or record-keeping purposes.

Client Monitoring and Support

Conduct routine checks on clients to ensure safety, well-being, and adherence to facility rules and policies. Observe and document client behaviors, reporting any concerns or incidents to staff promptly. Offer emotional support and encouragement to clients, promoting a positive and respectful environment. Provide transportation for clients as needed but not limited to admissions, discharge, appointments, legal system etc.

Assistance with Daily Living Activities

Assist clients with daily activities as needed, including meal support, personal hygiene, and organizing personal spaces. Encourage clients to participate in scheduled activities, treatment sessions, and group meetings. Help clients adhere to their treatment schedules, providing reminders and guidance. Take vital signs and report unusual recordings to the nursing staff. Provide medication observation for specific levels of care under the direction of the nursing team.

Group Facilitation and Activities

Facilitate group activities under the direction of clinical staff, supporting social interaction, coping skill-building, and recreation. Support therapeutic groups, such as life skills workshops, relapse prevention, and mindfulness activities. Monitor group dynamics to ensure a safe, inclusive, and supportive setting for all clients.

Crisis Intervention and De-escalation

Respond to and assist in de-escalating crises or emergencies, using approved techniques to maintain safety. Implement de-escalation strategies to prevent or mitigate aggressive or disruptive behaviors. Engage in against medical advice conversations/approaches to help clients make a better choice in remaining in treatment Report crises or high-risk incidents to clinical supervisors and follow established protocols for incident documentation. Supportive to the company's vision and approach of longer lengths of stay and positive outcomes for lasting recovery.

Documentation and Reporting

Accurately document client interactions, observations, and any significant changes in behavior in the electronic health record (EHR). Report any client concerns, incidents, or behavioral changes to the BHT Supervisor or clinical team. Ensure timely, thorough, and confidential handling of all documentation in compliance with HIPAA and facility guidelines.

Collaboration with Clinical Team

Work closely with therapists, counselors, nurses, and other clinical staff to support each client's individualized treatment plan. Participate in team meetings to provide updates on client progress, behaviors, and needs. Communicate openly with team members to maintain a unified approach to care.

Health and Safety Maintenance

Perform routine safety checks of the facility and report any maintenance or safety issues. Follow infection control and cleanliness protocols, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for clients and staff. Educate clients on facility guidelines, including safety and emergency procedures, as needed.

Qualifications:



High school diploma or GED required. Valid Virginia driver's license with a clean driving record; commercial driver's license (CDL) preferred or willingness to obtain if required by the facility. Minimum of 2 years of experience in a driving, transportation, or customer service role; experience in healthcare or behavioral health settings is preferred. Knowledge of Virginia state traffic laws, vehicle safety protocols, and basic vehicle maintenance. Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) - certified by the Virginia Department of Health Professions preferred but not required. Certification in First Aid and CPR, or willingness to obtain upon hire. Provide the facility with DMV driving record with an issue date within 30 days and on an annual basis.

Must meet pre-employment and maintain all applicable state, national, and job-related guidelines for reference checking, background screening, urine drug screening & health screening (if chosen), DMV (if applicable), insurance (if applicable), and license/credential verifications
This role is essential in supporting clients' access to care by providing safe, dependable transportation that facilitates their journey through recovery.
