Blue Stakes Locator

(District Permits Officer I) position in the Region Two Headquarters Office in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Blue Stakes Program is vital in helping protect the UDOT fiber infrastructure from damage due to accidental digging near or on UDOT fiber lines. This position will be part of a crew that locates and marks UDOT Region Two owned underground utilities. You will represent the Region regarding the encroachment upon the right-of-way by being responsible for the protection of UDOT's right-of-way and facilities including the inspection of permits issued by the permits officer for any use, including working on or changing of the right-of-way. You will aid in the control of all outdoor signing and junkyards adjacent to state and federal highways within the Region including inspection and removal, if necessary.



You will work outdoors in all weather conditions; drive throughout the region's boundaries; and subject to 24/7 availability to respond to emergencies.

Principal Duties

As the Blue Stakes Locator, you will assist with the blue stakes requests process and maintaining utility maps of the region or the buried utilities as directed by the Blue Stakes Coordinator. In addition, you will be responsible for:Properly marking various underground utilities in varied conditions. Utilizing various electronic locating/designation equipment. Inspecting placement and handling of borrow and roadway excavation, placement of untreated base course, cement treated base course, bituminous seal coat and bituminous prime/track coat; prepare inspection reports and data for documentation. Processing Blue Stakes tickets. Issuing licenses, permits, registrations, certificates, etc. Reading and understanding maps, utility prints and site blue prints. Preparing and maintaining detailed and accurate inspection reports, records and logs. Other duties as required, to facilitate the region's permit office operations.

Qualified Candidate

The qualified candidate for this position is someone who has:Knowledge of underground facilities laws and regulations, traffic control and traffic management systems. Knowledge of fiber optics, electrical theory, practice methods and techniques for electronic installations. Knowledge and experience in the installation of underground utilities. Knowledge and experience using standard electronic hand held tools and electronic measuring devices. The ability to work with little or no supervision. Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.

Preferences

Preference may be given to applicants who have two (2) years of utility locating experience.

Preferences may also be given to those with Transportation Technician experience.

This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results. You may be reassigned to a different work location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader. Standard 40 hours per week, schedule subject to change and subject to 24 hour availability, overtime, and varied work schedules due to inclement weather conditions, job assignment, and emergencies. This job risks may be found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g.; working in heavy traffic, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, etc. * The work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy items (man hole lids up to 70 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
