Job Purpose and Objectives:



Responsible for answering requests for service from the public, including all emergency calls and dispatching appropriate emergency personnel.


Essential Functions:




Operates the dispatch system by answering 911 and administrative calls for assistance and manage callers identify and mitigate caller safety, document information accurately, and provide pre-arrival instructions Process and prioritizes requests for service and dispatches appropriate personnel including county-wide law enforcement, fire, ambulance, animal control, and public works departments Maintains status and checks welfare of first responders Monitors building alarms and alarm systems through alarm companies for all Ellis County institutions Monitors National Warning System communications Maintains detailed and accurate records of all requests, responses, and resource information Gathers and provides road and weather information and activates severe weather alerts and notifies Emergency Operations Center personnel Relays necessary information to other agencies Maintains information on county-wide entry data to the National Crime Information Center and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state and local laws and ordinances Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools, and other aids as required or needed Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic Testifies in court as needed Attends trainings and maintains certifications

Position Requirements:




High school diploma or other equivalent Technical degree or some college credit preferred Meet Kansas Criminal Justice Information System's (KCJIS) access requirements

Certifications / Licenses:




Emergency Medical Dispatching, Fire Service Dispatching, Law Enforcement Dispatch, and KCJIS Security Awareness and National Crime Information Center certification required within six months of hire date

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:




Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, emergency procedures, and departmental policies Ability to read and interpret written instructions, reports, and maps Excellent organizational, leadership, and public relations skills Ability to function effectively and professionally in stressful situations Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously Strong written and verbal communication skills Problem solving and critical thinking skills Strong math, spelling, computer, and calculator abilities Ability to communicate in a professional, calm, and courteous manner with the general public and employees Attention to detail

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:





The physical demands include occasional maximum lift of 25 pounds from floor to waist; occasional forward reach; occasional crouch/bend; continuous bilateral hand coordination; continuous sit; occasional stand; occasional walk.


WORKING CONDITIONS:





This position requires the ability to remain calm and exercise good judgment in emergency situations while completing multi-task operations and must be able to work in a confined area and remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time in front of a computer terminal with exposure to noise. Shift work is a requirement of this position.

This position primarily works 12 hour shifts. Shifts are 6-6 and rotate from AM to PM every 4 months. This position is full-time benefits eligible & over-time eligible. The selected candidate must live within 45 miles of Ellis County.
